August 10th is the day the former Mead Paper Mill shuts down in Chillicothe, Ohio. The current owner of the mill, Pixelle Speciality Solutions, is attempting to use up the remaining logs in its woodlot. The August closure will end 200 plus years of a paper mill operating at this site in Appalachia's Ross County. In years past the woodlot would have logs piled around 60' tall and a gigantic water sprayer preventing the log from drying.
It seems a shame that Pixelle Paper Solutions didn't find a buyer for the mill. Politicians made all kinds of promises that they would find a way to keep the mill operating. The reality is that the mill will close, forever. A paper mill operated at this site for over 200 years. I think the mill's demise began with Mead Westvaco sale of the mill to a private investment firm in 2005. Glatfelter bought the mill in 2006 and operated it until 2019 when it was sold to Pixelle. It's a familiar story of an aged mill with dated and worn out machinery that is no longer competitive. The mill needed to be updated years ago.

The mill's closing will impact 800 employees and leaves Chillicothe, Ohio stunned. Another 1,000 contract workers will lose their jobs. Pixelle Speciality Solutions purchased the mill in 2019. The closing is set for August 10th. Spent a few hours photographing the mill in it's last days of operation. The mill and wood yard cover 100 acres on both sides of Hwy 23. This closure will have a very bad impact on the timber industry in rural southern Ohio. Located in Appalachian Ross County.
