Bank, London, UK. Whithead was the Chief Engineer of the City and South London Railway and he invented tunnel shields which made digging the deep tube lines possible. The statue hides a ventilation shaft for (today) London Underground's Northern Line at Bank Station.

In the photo on the left we see the first underground station opened at London Bridge. It was opened by the City and South London Railway (C&SLR) on 25 February 1900.
After other entrances to the station were built this one was taken out of use and the building was demolished in 2013.
