The Winter Park Ski Train was started by the Denver & Rio Grade Western in 1940, shuttling skiers and other winter adventures from Denver to the Winter Park Resort as the western portal of the Moffat Tunnel. The train was taken over by a private company in 1988, which discontinued the train in 2009 due to financial difficulties related to rising insurance prices and the 2008 financial crisis.
Amtrak's version of the Winter Park Ski Train began with a trial revival in 2015, returning to regular service over the full winter season in 2017.
In 2024, Amtrak ran the ski train every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from January through the end of March. And in addition it ran on MLK Jr Day, Presidents' Day, and a couple Thursdays. Here, on a snowy Friday afternoon, the Winter Park Express pulls into the Winter Park Resort station to pick up passengers headed back to Denver.
