"I'd say we are in the limelight. Literally. No red carpet to walk on but I hear all kinds of magazines and news stations have been fascinated about our humble crane life. Not to mention paparazzi with big or small cameras. Sometimes it annoys me, but I think my sister likes being in the center of attention. She likes to walk right in front of me when I just want to show off my nice-looking feathering I have grown."

"This is my family. The only family I have ever known. The family who has taught me to be a perfect Sandhill Crane to my own ability and has accepted me as their own regardless of my differences. They have fed me, supported me, kept me warm and safe, protected me from all the dangers (those big snapping turtles in our home pond for one!!!) and above all, they have loved me with all my oddities for the past almost four months now!
This photo starts my visual story, as told by me and this account's owner who has followed our lives almost daily as long as I and my "little" sibling who I call "sister" (but who knows yet) have existed.
May I introduce... my father is walking on MY right side, and my mother and my sister are on MY left side on this picture. Together, we are a family that turns heads and makes people look twice!"

Hi all!
This story is only the third confirmed instance of a cross-species adoption nationwide here in the United States. Such thing was previously observed in Michigan in 2019, and again just last year also here in Madison WI, which I followed and documented closely as well (you can see photos about that story on my Flickr account here). Unfortunately, neither one of those stories ended well. There has also been an unusual sighting in Homer, Alaska in 2011, when a Canada goose was seen living with and behaving like a crane, suggesting this kind of adoption may have happened then too.
I have heard several versions of how this unusual, blended family came to be, but the most reliable one is that the cranes chased the Canada Geese off of their nest and took over that nest. One goose egg was left behind then and the cranes also laid an egg of their own. The Gosling was hatched on April 29th, 2025 and the colt hatched on May 1st or 2nd, 2025.
This is their story. These birds are very unique and close to my heart; I feel they are part of my family now. It has been surreal and captivating to follow their lives throughout this past summer and feel joy for their unlikely milestones. I am extremely proud of THEM ALL ❤️!
Stay tuned. I will post a photo or two of their journey every day.
