A pale blue tower from 2013 was beautiful despite the damage done to it. by Tim Kiser

A pale blue tower from 2013 was beautiful despite the damage done to it.

It was missing four of its pale blue panels of exterior insulation finishing system!, but I still loved it because I love pale blue.

"1947 E. Dal Porto" reads the datestone at the top of the building. Chrysler 200s were manufactured in Sterling Heights, Michigan, for model years 2011-2017, and then discontinued.

In Hampton, Virginia, was a shiny new building, erected 2023, named "The Constellation on King."

Yea it was completed in 2023 but it looks like it was built sometime earlier than that, such as the 1990s, 2000s, or 2010s. To me it doesn't resemble a constellation at all.

Meanwhile a cylinder of windows was partially embedded in a building.

A cylinder of windows was partially embedded in a building, on purpose: So weird! Yet it happened all the time in the U.S. in the late 19th century.

It looks even weirder nowadays, with the blank wall of bricked-in doors and windows at its underneath.

CHERISH THY FOND NOSTALGIÆ for oriel windows with air conditioners poking out.

Run over there and sit on the bench, I'll take your picture. Watch for cars.

In 2021 a 2017 Dodge Journey has journeyed to an 1888 pretzels building.

Like all Dodge Journeys, this one was manufactured in Toluca, Mexico, outside Mexico City, and here we are in Freeport, Illinois. Does the driver know and like that their car is from Mexico I wonder.

The mysterious 21st-century people who reside in the upstairs apartments of old commercial buildings in the smalltown downtowns of the U.S. are fascinating to the rest of us. We wish we could observe their private routines.

As recently as 2019 the sign above the door said "LONDON" instead of "PRETZELS": Weird!

Ah yes the Wiecke Block, in Davenport, from 1901, of course I remember it. by Tim Kiser

Ah yes the Wiecke Block, in Davenport, from 1901, of course I remember it.

The signs "Del-Rich Co." and "Neat Stuff" would have us think that there are two businesses here, but no it's a single pawnshop named "Del-Rich Loan & Neat Stuff Antiques." Each pawned antique you buy will come with an implied sad story of the poverty and desperation for which the U.S. is renowned.

The building is from 1901 according to the official documentation of the Davenport Downtown Commercial Historic District, which also identifies the ahistorical surface treatment on the upper floors as parge, applied over the building's original masonry.

Beige siding!

Here, read this description of the building from the official documentation of the Moline Downtown Commercial Historic District:

"1302 4th Avenue, Paulsen Building (1900): This two-story brick Queen Anne commercial-residential anchor block's main entrance is canted with an oriel suspended over the doorway. It has a stone belt course beneath the second-floor windows, and another above the windows with a smaller window situated within a patterned brick arch beneath a small centered gable."

Well if you want to see any of that, you'll need to walk around to the other side of the building. I'll be over here looking at this nice expanse of siding!

It was the 1920s and the "Spanish Eclectic Style" had arrived in Topeka, in the form of fancy renovations to a building from circa 1888.

Here was a software business, "Thoroughbred Computer Systems," occupying the building one hundred years later. Are these businesspeople enjoying their time here?

Upstairs, a glazed terracotta frieze, a pair of spiral columns, and a clay tile roof are expressions of "Spanish Eclectic."

The "James B. Shea Building" gets verdigris upon its cornice and oriels. by Tim Kiser

The "James B. Shea Building" gets verdigris upon its cornice and oriels.

According to Sanborn fire insurance maps, the building appears to have been built sometime between 1912 and 1921: On the 1912 map an asymmetrical two-story brick building was at this location, and on the 1921 a symmetrical three-story brick building (like this one!) is depicted. This leaves open the possibility that maybe the two-story building was expanded/remodeled sometime during that period.

I browsed through old New London city directories from 1912-1921 at ancestrylibrary.com, and found the listings to be inadequate for a confident determination as to when exactly a new or expanded building appeared here, but on the basis of those listings, in combination with the fire insurance maps, I think the building (or this iteration of it) is probably from the mid-to-late 1910s.

Anyhow, "I like to be over here by the trash," I like to say.

An abandoned convenience store!, plus apartments upstairs. by Tim Kiser

An abandoned convenience store!, plus apartments upstairs.

"An abandoned convenience store!" I exclaimed, and I giggled and clapped my hands and did a little "running in place and twirling" dance.

But per some online searching, it looks like the supposed "corner store" might never have actually opened?

There used to be a Subway restaurant here, as seen in 2013.

The City of New London's online property database says the building is from 1924. Do we think that's true?
