Dues Eumig separades per una guerra / Two Eumig's and a World War between them

IN ENGLISH BELOW THE LINE

Hi diu "Made in Germany".

==================================

To the right, an Eumig C3 8mm camera made in Germany c.1938-1939, and to the left an Eumig C3 made in Austria c.1948-1950. But both were manufactured in the same Vienna factory. How's that possible? The historic details below...

There are many cameras whose productions were affected in one way or another by Nazi expansionism and the Second World War. Some stopped being manufactured, or had specific variants for the military. But in this case, the political and military history of Europe affected this amateur film camera.

To the right, the Eumig C3, 8mm format camera with spring motor and integrated light meter (one of the first in the world). The interesting detail, in this case, is that the lever for winding the spring has the manufacturing indication. It says "Made in Germany". But know that on Eumig C3s manufactured in 1937-38 and those manufactured between 1948 and 1953 it said "Made in Austria". Only those made in 1938-39 say "Germany". Well, all C3 production was always done in Vienna. What changed was not the factory, but the border, since from May 12, 1938, with the annexation (Anschluss) of Austria by Nazi Germany, everything became Germany. In fact, it was like this until the total defeat of the Nazis in 1945, but the C3 had already stopped being produced in 1939 itself. Production did not continue until 1948, again with "Made in Austria" on these cameras.

Other details of this model, which obviously dates from 1938-39, are the Meyer Görlitz Trioplan f2.7/12.5mm lens as well as some details of the front part (such as the lever to adjust the aperture) which appear to be very later, from the 1950s. Obviously some parts were renewed at some point, probably at an authorized supplier, since the camera has disassembly points stamped with the official Eumig brand (so those can't be tampered by unauthoirzed repairmen).

It's newer sister, made in post-war Austria, has almost the same lens and many other details. In fact, the only difference is that the lens is now f1.9 (instead of f2,7) and the relevant inscription "Made in....", reflecting the end of the nazi imperialism.
