A series of Coronal Mass Ejections ignited a G4 level Geomagnetic Storm—dazzling much of the Northern Hemisphere showers of the Aurora Borealis this weekend. More commonly referred to as the "Northern Lights" the brilliant reds, greens, and violets dancing across the sky are caused by charged particles bouncing off the Earth's magnetic field. The most intense Geomagnetic storm in two decades, I was caught completely off guard as I set up for a shot of the 30s era B&O signal bridge at SE Haskins with what was set to be milestone train for me.
Aiming for an exposure of the SB taconite, and long since I forgot the news reports about the solar storm earlier in the week, I looked up from a test shot to a jaw-dropping display of Northern Lights.
With an approach limited indication, a wave of green auroras danced across the western sky creating this fantastic scene.
L341 would clear the signal moments later, and notch my 14,000th all-time recorded train. It was a breathtaking way to hit such a significant a milestone and an unforgettable night
