Witness to earlier generations living under thatch roofing

As the economic rebuilding and recovery in postwar Japan gradually led to the economic boom years from 1963 to 1993, old housing stock and shops and small factories were demolished and new ones built. Some of the sturdier houses, though, were reroofed in metal, to preserve the insulating power of thatch without having to replace one side every 10 years and then the opposite side 10 years after that. So in addition to extending the life of the roof and the house overall, the sight of this house is also a reminder of the times after WWII, including the boom years that followed the desperate times post-war.

Expressively celebratory anthropomorphic gestures of crape myrtle trees at the Tallahassee city bus terminal, in late winter.

Each treebranch is a joyously upraised "human arm."

Wow the bus terminal looks like it was very inexpensively constructed.

Shuttlewagon SWX435C, Hamlet CSX Hump Yard, Hamlet, North Carolina

We were taken up into the CSXT Control Tower in Groups to prevent overcrowding and to prevent any interruption of the Tower Operator Duties.

In November 2005, I took an AMTRAK Train from Tampa Union Station in Florida to Hamlet, North, Carolina to attend a Summer Convention of the ACL/SAL Historical Society in and around the Hamlet Area Hamlet Metro Area, One of the sites we visited was CSX Hump Classification Yard Hamlet.

Tower Mailing Address: 127 CSX Drive, Marks Creek, NC 28345

This Yard is relies on Gravity, a Ladder of Switches and Speed Retarders to assemble trains destined for all parts of the US and Canada on an assortment of tracks, one track for each destination. or Intermediate Yard.In addition to the Posters & Signs, a no longer used caboose, now serves as a place for Safety Classes and Safety Signs.

This particular photograph shows the Shuttle Wagon, which is used to ferry equipment and Workers around this Vast Yard in Hamlet (Marks Creek Township), North Carolina.

Priory Fields - Priory Road, Yardley Wood - corrugated metal roof by ell brown

Priory Fields - Priory Road, Yardley Wood - corrugated metal roof

Priory Fields - Priory Road, Yardley Wood.

This was just beyond the pond.

This corrugated metal roof.

There was no access to the fields in winter.

Well not from down here, saw a gate saying Private.

Must be a public entrance somewhere to Priory Fields Nature Reserve. Probably best to wait until Spring or Summer, as during winter the paths would be muddy.

Despite it now being in the West Midlands it is maintained by the Warwickshire Wildlife Trust.

Comprising of four fields, this peaceful oasis is bisected by Mill Stream, which feeds the large mill pool sitting adjacent to the reserve. Predominantly moss and swampland in 972AD, the site gave rise to heath and pasture by 1495, and eventually became Yardley Wood Common until 1847. Changing little since, the site still offers remnants of heathland and acidic grassland which are now rare habitats in Warwickshire.

Ah, Wakayama City, the Paris of the Orient!

Not-particularly-bucolic view out my hotel window. I'd been planning to camp originally, but realised I was going to be in for a rough night/next day if I didn't get a hot shower and somewhere dry to sleep.
