Sunburst

An Art Deco Sunburst door, although historically at odds with its 19th-century host at Tullow, County Carlow, makes an effective statement.

Grey render, electricity cables, and drainpipes set this grid-like scene around a double door and chunky 19th-century fanlight at the Brigidine Convent in Tullow, County Carlow.

Was this the "Madding Crowd"? by National Library of Ireland on The Commons

Was this the "Madding Crowd"?

With a nod to Thomas Hardy's novel "Far from the Madding Crowd", this image of a crowd of people outside the "Asylum" in Carlow. Asylums, aka Psychiatric Hospitals, were supposed to be a place of safety for the mentally ill but in accordance with the times staying there became a stigma. Interestingly the word "Asylum" has taken wings today, and is applied with the same pejorative vigour to those who seek it!
Look for the wise man who has found a nice shady place to wait things out?

Coolnamara Viewing Point (co. Carlow) by René_Potsdam

Coolnamara Viewing Point (co. Carlow)

Links is Kilkenny, rechts is Carlow.

The river Barrow forms a natural border between the counties Kilkenny and Carlow in Ireland for several miles. This can be seen perfectly from the Coolnamara viewing point near Ballykeenan (with county Carlow being to the right of the river and county Kilkenny to the left). Seen and shot on a beautiful day in March 2000.
