A trig point, a little way above the Thorpe Lane pitch, stands at 998 feet. The Austerlands cricket ground is said to be the highest in Lancashire (although neighbours Moorside make the same claim). Prior to local government reorganisation, in 1974, the Yorkshire-Lancashire border passed through the middle of the Thorpe Lane pitch. Historically, Saddleworth was part of Yorkshire's West Riding.
