20905 & 20096 LtoR Doncaster West Yard Sidings 18/06/2006

20905 (the ex 20225) plus 20096 stabled at the Doncaster West Yard Sidings by the Works.

HISTORY OF 20905:
20905 was built as D8325 by English Electric and delivered to BR’s Polmadie (66A) Depot on 07/02/1968 (Works No. E3708).

D8325 to D8327 were all delivered the same day. These were the final Class 20 batch, the first being built in 1957.

They were also part of a final batch (D8316 to D8327) built with electronic control systems for working MGR (Merry Go Round) coal trains from the Fife coalfields to the nearby Longannet Power Station.

D8325 was allocated to the following depots during its working life with BR:
Polmadie (66A) from 07/02/1968
Eastfield (65A) from April 1968
Haymarket (64B) from May 1969
Immingham (IM) on 15/05/1988
Toton from unknown date

In September 1974, it became 20225 under TOPS.

Soon stored from Toton's DCMN pool and withdrawn, in 1989, it was sold to Hunslet-Barclay for use on their weedkilling trains contract.

On 22/08/1989. after being modified at Hunslet-Barclay’s Leeds Works, it was re-classified as a Class 20/9 and renumbered to 20905. In September 1989, 20905 was named “Iona”, which it carried until September 1998.

When DRS won the contract in 1998, they bought the 6 Class 20/9s off Hunslet-Barclay.

But things looked grim for 20905. It never worked for DRS.

They initially stopped repair work and stored it unserviceable in October 2000.

On 23 October 2001, it was sent by road to Wabtec’s Doncaster Works (next door to this photo).

Finally released into traffic after almost 2 years at Wabtec, it was collected from Doncaster on 30 July 2003 and taken to Carlisle Kingmoor in full DRS livery.

Sadly, it needed further repairs. With expected repair dates getting pushed out, DRS once again gave up and stored it XHSS on 4 January 2004.

In early 2005, all the DRS Class 20/9s were sold to Harry Needle's HNRC.

In April 2005 it moved by road to Barrow Hill for TPWS fitment and repairs.

On 14 September 2005, HNRC had 20905 active for the first time in over 7 years.

HNRC used 20905 for stock moves, spot hire and long-term hire to GBRF over the next 13 years until 2018, when 20905 was stored at Barrow Hill.

It moved again for the first time in 5 years on 15 May 2023 for tyre turning in Leeds.

After repair, it was again sold, in January 2024 to Balfour Beatty who are using it on their Drain Train engineer train with 20901.

Considering how many times this loco has been out of use for many years, this is a great result for a loco that in January 2025 is in its 57th year 😊

HISTORY OF 20096:
20096 was built as D8096 by English Electric and delivered to BR’s Eastfield (65A) Depot on 26/10/1961 (Works No. E3002).

D8096 was allocated to the following depots during its working life with BR:
Eastfield (65A) from January 1961
Polmadie (66A) from January 1968
“Nottingham Division” (16D) from March 1970 (allocated to the area, but not a specific depot)
Polmadie (66A) from October 1971
Eastfield (65A) from March 1972
Tinsley (TI) from November 1978
Thornaby (TE) from unknown date

In April 1974, it became 20096 under TOPS.

20096 was stored from Thornaby's FMSY pool in June 1992.

After a few years in storage, bought by HNRC - Harry Needle Railroad Company and reactivated.
For the next 20 years, HNRC used it for various stock moves, spot hire and long-term hire to GBRF.

In February 2020, 20096 was sold to LSL - Locomotive Services Limited.

LSL have painted it in BR green and are using it for pretty much the same as Harry’s company did.

It is still active in January 2025 – not bad for a 63 year old loco 😊

20905 was originally D8325 and was built by English Electric at the Vulcan Foundry. It entered traffic February 1968 initially allocated to Polmadie transferring quickly Eastfield and then to Edinburgh Haymarket in May 1969 for Fife coal traffic. Renumbered 20225 under the 1973 TOPS renumbering scheme its next transfer was nineteen years later when it left Scotland for Immingham in May 1988. Soon after arriving at Immingham it was withdrawn and was one of six class 20 locomotives sold to Hunslet-Barclay for weedkilling duties and renumbered 20905. It was used on these duties from 1989 – 1998 when the weedkilling contract passed to DRS and 20905 became part of the DRS fleet. In February 2005 it was sold to HNRC, it then moved on to GBRf and is currently (March 2024) along with 20901 being prepared for use with Balfour Beatty and was dispatched to Eastleigh a few days later for a repaint into Balfour Beatty colours.
