“The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction,” December, 1971. Mel Hunter’s “last man” robot discovers a Punch & Judy show.

Identified as “the last man” by his creator, the robot is the master puppeteer in a found Punch & Judy show; that is, if he can untangle the marionette strings. The robot’s experiences were documented on no less than sixteen covers of F&SF magazine, beginning with the October 1955 issue, and ending with the May, 2003 issue of the magazine. These covers depict the lone robot in various settings and guises, symbolizing the remnants of humanity after a cataclysmic event. The haunting imagery captured the imagination of many readers over the years.

Hunter's work on these covers earned him recognition and accolades, including the Hugo Award for Best Professional Artist in 1960-1962 and the Locus Award for Best Magazine Artist in 1972. The last man robot remains a memorable and influential piece in the history of science fiction art.

'H' series Carousel introduction

The 1966 styling is unchanged but Carousel slide projectors from Kodak are now available with a more efficient halogen reflector lamp. Dropping the heat output by 200 watts allows for a much quieter fan.

The numerical designations still reflect different feature levels. (If you ever have some reason to purchase a used Carousel projector, the 750H is a solid choice.)

Olympus FTL early advertising

Along with the Praktica's unique electrical contacts, 1971's other M42-mount SLR to offer open-aperture metering was the short-lived Olympus FTL. A very small nub on the back face of the aperture ring engages with a slider underneath the lens throat to communicate the f/stop setting. This is very similar to the scheme adopted by the Fujica ST801 in the following year.

The colored Platonic solids are a reference to some other launch advertising. Despite the copy promising "smaller and lighter" the FTL would quickly be dumped in favor of an even more radical model.

Fujica ST701 early advertising

Please see the wiki article on the ST701 and an early review. This ad gives a shoutout to Fuji's other lines of business including film, not-Super-8 movie cameras, and the "Texas Leica" Fujica G690.

Singlex vs. Spotmatic by camerawiki

Singlex vs. Spotmatic

1971's crowded field of M42-mount SLRs was facing a difficult future, as Canon, Mamiya, and even the East Germans were moving away from stopdown metering. That less convenient metering method was increasingly being painted as the realm of affordable entry-level models.

So here Ricoh is confronting the issue head-on, and promoting its Singlex TLS as the cost-conscious choice. The (vertically-traveling) Copal Square shutter even offers higher flash synch speed than the market-leading Pentax.

Do notice that weight difference, though!

Mamiya/Sekor Auto XTL

See the wiki article on the Auto XTL, which introduced a new bayonet mount for the Mamiya brand. As always, Ponder & Best have put together an attention-grabbing ad campaign.

The successful DTL series (M42 stopdown metering) would continue in parallel. Advertising increasingly promoted them as an affordable entry point for young photographers.

1971 Praktica LLC

See the wiki article on the Praktica LLC. This model pioneers a new method to enable open-aperture metering with M42 lenses. Prior M42 models like the Pentax Spotmatic must meter while stopped down to shooting aperture (giving a dimmed viewfinder image).

The Olympus FTL was a contemporary model which achieved the same result (but mechanically, not electrically). However it left the market quite rapidly in favor of the bayonet-mount OM System.

Topcon Super D

This is a somewhat perplexing multipage ad for the Beseler Topcon Super D (which outside the US was known as the Topcon RE Super).

References to the CONTRAST MODULATOR metering system seem to be aimed at Minolta's widely-promoted CLC system. However what this Topcon meter actually does is not explained in any clear way.

India Gate by ramnath bhat

India Gate

The India Gate designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens is a national monument of India. It is located in national capital New Delhi. The foundation stone of India Gate was laid by His Royal Highness, the Duke of Connaught in 1921. The monument was dedicated to the nation 10 years later by the then Viceroy, Lord Irwin. Another memorial, Amar Jawan Jyoti was added much later, after India got its independence. The eternal flame burns day and night under the arch to remind the nation of soldiers who laid down their lives in the Indo-Pakistan War of December 1971.
The India Gate, an "Arc-de-Triomphe" like archway in the middle of a crossroad. Almost similar to its French counterpart, it commemorates the 70,000 Indian soldiers who lost their lives fighting for the British Army during the World War I. The memorial bears the names of more than 13,516 British and Indian soldiers killed in the Northwestern Frontier in the Afghan war of 1919.

The entire arch stands on a low base of red Bharatpur stone and rises in stages to a huge moulding. The cornice is inscribed with the Imperial suns while both sides of the arch have INDIA, flanked by the dates MCMXIV (1914 left) and MCMXIX (1919 right). The shallow domed bowl at the top was intended to be filled with burning oil on anniversaries but this is rarely done.

Number 40.....

Like the upcoming update on Irish Terminus.com. the Number 40 seems to be in the news these days, but in the Middle East the United Arab Emirates celebrates it's 40th Anniversary since being founded in December 1971.

And how well it's prospered, particularly in the past 20 years.Happy 40th UAE....
