A daily newspaper report from 2 July 1898 that made me smile. Whether it ever became a success; I have not been able to find anything else about it.
I also like the solemn language of the time. I have tried to translate it as accurately as possible, but I fear some nuances are gone.
"A society of self-operating bicycle-preserving machinery has been established at Rotterdam.
This invention comprises a device which makes it impossible to take away bicycles placed therein.
The cyclist places his bicycle in the device,
puts a 2 1/2 cents coin in the opening near the lid,
lifts the lid,
revealing a key and the device encloses the rim with tyre of the bicycle by means of a steel ring,
the cyclist takes the key with him.
To retrieve his bicycle, he opens the cover,
puts the key back in place,
turns to the right for a moment,
while closing the cover again.
This company has requested the S.S. Company to be allowed to place some of these devices at the stations"
The Maatschappij tot Exploitatie van Staatsspoorwegen (SS) was a former Dutch railway company that existed from 26 September 1863 to 31 December 1937. In 1917, the company together with the HIJSM (Hollandsche IJzeren Spoorweg-Maatschappij) founded the stakes company Nederlandsche Spoorwegen. The two companies eventually merged to form N.V. Nederlandsche Spoorwegen on 1 January 1938 (the society that exists to this day).
Found on Delpher while searching for a half-brother of my grandfather who emigrated to South Africa. ;-)
