On the Rear of Amtrak No. 8

Dome sleeper Bella Vista is unusual for cars with rear platforms in that the entrance door is to the left side rather than being centered. There is a large window on the right that is for the master suite.

The cars is shown on the rear of the eastbound Amtrak Empire Builder passing through Lake Forest, Illinois.

Before being rebuilt in 2001 by Rail Ventures, the car was Union Pacific dome lounge Native Son. It was the second Rail Ventures car to carry the Bella Vista name.

Got Most of It

The presence of dome-sleeper Bella Vista on the rear of the eastbound Amtrak Empire Builder caught me by surprise and I was unable to get an image of the full car as it came toward me.

Whatever the case, the car was once Union Pacific dome lounge Native Son and and was rebuilt in 2001 by Rail Venture to have sleeping compartments, dining facilities and a rear platform. Information I found online suggests the car is now owned and or operated by Firiends of the 261, a former Milwaukee Road steam locomotive based in Minnesota.

The interior is said to be unusual because the master suite is located at the rear of the car and has a large picture window opening onto the rear platform in addition to a side window.

The former Union Pacific dome lounge car was acquired by Rail Ventures and rebuilt into a sleeper dome with a rear platform added in the process. It was the second of two cars owned by Rail Ventures to have the Bella Vista name.
