Iberia - EC-ABC close up - Malaga Airport (AGP/LEMG)

27-11-2015 - Iberia, Douglas C-47B Skytrain (DC-3).

Two recognisable Spanish brands.
This beautifully preserved C-47 is on display at the Malaga Airport Museum (Located at Malaga Airport - Free entry!).
Displayed as EC-ABC, this aircraft is in fact EC-CPO.

The real EC-ABC unfortunately crashed in the Pico del Telegrafio mountains, Cuenca, on 29th April 1959 while on a scheduled flight from Barcelona to Madrid.

Info:

The aircraft was built in 1945 and delivered as 45-1091 to the US Air Force in August 1945 - attached to the Air Transport Command 556 Base Unit.
It was de-commissioned in 1961 and registered as N86442 to the Charlotte Aircraft Corporation on 5-10-1961.
The aircraft was then delivered the Spanish Air Force as T.3-50 on 5-5-1962. In late 1977 the aircraft was sold to Aerotransporte de Espana and registered EC-CPO. The aircraft was withdrawn from use on 19-8-1978 and was never flown again. It sat at Alicante airport for over years before being purchased by the Malaga Airport Museum in 2003 and was transported by road to the museum. It was restored and displayed in the I.D of EC-ABC.

The BAC One-Eleven in the background is probably Bavaria’s D-ANDY also reported at Riem that day. Another Royal Hellenic Air Force C-47D, 92622, was noted at Riem about two months later, on 11 September 1968. Otherwise, I have no further reports of any RHAF C-47s at Riem in the 1960s or 1970s. However, sister ship 92629 was displayed and performed at the Landsberg Air Base open day in September 1977, about 60 km from Munich.

YU-ACA was not an unusual visitor to Riem in the 1960s - I have reports from 22 December 1967, 18 October 1968 and 31 December 1970. Here the aircraft is taxiing to runway 25 for take-off. JAT used DC-3s for services to Riem for almost 20 years, initially flying passengers and later only freight.
