See this weird sign. People used to say "pulled in" to mean "towed."

Read it aloud with me:

Private Parking Lot
LEELAND HOTEL GUEST ONLY
Keep out or Cars will be Pulled In.

The extra stroke at the top of the lowercase "g" in "Parking" is super weird.

What BRAIN WEIRDNESS was it?, that birthed the signpainter's weird conceptual mismatch between a parking lot, which is commonly understood to contain multiple parking spaces for multiple motorists, and the single "hotel guest" to whom the sign is addressed?, and for whom the entire parking lot is apparently reserved (according to the literal words of the sign)?

Moreover, taken literally, "Keep out or Cars will be Pulled In" tells us that multiple cars already in the parking lot — maybe every car! — will be towed if any person enters the parking lot, for any reason. The "keep out" message is too broadly directed — at everybody!, including hotel guests. Our signpainter seemed not to know how to express the idea that the punishment for unauthorized parking is that the unauthorized car, and only the unauthorized car, will be towed.

There is a cartoon picture of a banjo-playing horse with flowers in its mane.

One of the office buildings downtown got its façade refreshed! by Tim Kiser

One of the office buildings downtown got its façade refreshed!

I still remember when its faux mansard was removed in 2019.

Lo this was the Register and Bee Building at 115-117 S Union St in Danville, Virginia, originally two buildings, each erected sometime between 1899 and 1904.

The building is physically within the Downtown Danville Historic District (93000830 on the National Register of Historic Places), and was initially designated a "noncontributing building" because its scored concrete façade was thought to have been installed sometime after World War II. LATER RESEARCH REVEALED that the concrete façade (sans the windows) is from 1939, when it was converted to a movie theater (the Dan Theatre). So its status was changed to "contributing building" in 2019, and I hope there was a formal ceremony.

Hey look a building from 1948 got its façade remodeled in the 1970s.

The building (410 Patton St) was built in 1948, according to the City of Danville's property search website; and remodeled in the 1970s according to the official documentation of the federally-designated Downtown Danville Historic District, within which the building is designated a "noncontributing property."

I adore the chainlink-topped retaining wall of this elevated parking lot, who has been a dear friend of mine for many years.

The dead shrubs complement my personality — or are they stumps of dead trees.

See the red rocks in the aggregate at the base of the wall. See the two kinds of chainlink, old and new. Lichens occur.
