A hairy airy platform at Marsden Grotto. Marsden Grotto is an unusual hotel built into the caves at the foot of the cliffs in Marsden Bay at South Shields. It was modernised in 1937, with the addition of a lift to carry the customers and provisions down the cliff face to the amenities. In the days before the lift, people used the steps down to the hotel and had a never-ending climb to get back up again. The beer and everything else was delivered from this platform which jutted out over the void at the edge of the cliffs. One wonders what a modern-day Risk Assessor would make of this arrangement. The chain around the pulley fastened to the post is attached to a Vaux Brewery lorry which is off to the right and moving slowly forward to lower the load through the hole at the far end of the platform. It is not quite clear why the dray man has to stand astride the chain but if it were to come loose he would be in trouble! : 1937 : origin unknown,
