Ten inch disappearing gun made by Elswick Ordnance Company. The gun was loaded in a pit, then emerged above the surface, fired and then immediately lowered again. This idea was that this made it difficult for ships to aim at. Fort Nepean, Victoria, Australia.

Plaque on the ten-inch disappearing gun made by Elswick Ordnance Company. I interpret “3 COMM Z RECOVERY PL” on this plaque as “3 Command Z Recovery Platoon” but I do not know if that is correct. Likewise, “MELBOURNE WKSP COY RAEME” is probably “Melbourne Workshop Company, Royal Corps of Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers.” Fort Nepean, Victoria, Australia.

Raleigh Battery - Main Magazine, West Entrance

Raleigh Battery was constructed between 1890 and 1894 in defence of the Devonport Dockyard. It was equipped with teo 10-inch BL guns, mounted on what are believed to be two proptype mountings; one from the Elswick Ordnance Company (EOC) and the second from the Royal Carriage Department (RCD). The fort was in use until 1908 before the guns were removed in 1910 and the land finally sold off in 1946.
