This courthouse is Romanesque revival architecture, and was constructed in 1892. It is the work of architect James Riely Gordon, who practiced in San Antonio, Texas until 1902 before moving to New York. The native white limestone with red Pecos sandstone accents, is a signature work of Gordon's earlier works. It displays several features that have become hallmarks of his courthouse designs.
Sandstone deterioration and water infiltration took a toll on the courthouse, and a grant-funded project included restoring the sandstone and replacing the inappropriate metal windows. The grant also provides for restoring significant inferior public spaces. Restoration was completed in August 2002.
