Valley Railroad Company 2-8-0 Consolidation 97 rests at the station in Essex, Connecticut after a full day of hauling railfans during a photo charter hosted by Dak Dillon. As the engine idles in the evening light, Valley Railroad crew members discuss plans for the following day, while many tired railfans have returned to their cars, unseen behind the locomotive, packing away their camera gear in preparation for the journey home.

Pretty much on the outskirts of Haddam, Valley Railroad Company, 2-8-0 Consolidation 97, backs up for another photo run by. Pulling a three car passenger train, 97 roll plays as a 1930's era local commuter train which would've served the local area, from Old Saybrook up towards Middletown or even Hartford, Connecticut.

New Haven Railroad station with an order-board semaphore signal and platform is seen at Essex, Connecticut, 8-7-1929. As typical, there are billboard ads on the station building. Check out the old car in this view. This station is situated on the Valley Branch which originally operated a number of passenger trains daily between Hartford and Saybrook, with a few going beyond on the Shore Line to reach New London. In the later years of operation the passenger train service was reduced and then the gas electric coaches were used for several years.
