It's a shot from the July 2019 archives for this week's Thursday Monochrome group. The image shows tall ships as they pass downstream on the Saginaw River in Essexville, Michigan, on their way to a weekend "Tall Ship Celebration" in Bay City, Michigan. A crowd of folks, me among them, came out to see the ships as they passed by. Unfortunately, none were under sail as they went past, but they were still impressive to see.

Running along N Water St on the north side of Bay City, Huron & Eastern's 740 Job rolls eastward towards Essexville with 13 loads of fertilizer.
The track the train is moving onto is the former Michigan Central, while the track to the left is former Pere Marquette, now owned by the Lake State Railway.

After waiting for LSRC's Y126 to clear ahead at Foss Jct, Huron & Eastern's 740 Job rolls eastward past GM's Bay City Propulsion Systems Plant (they build auto engines). Just west of the GM plant, the train crossed the former Michigan Central swing bridge over the Saginaw River. There were once tracks for both the MC and Pere Marquette here, but consolidation has resulted in just one remaining set of rails. So, the HESR must share trackage with the LRSC here in order to access Saginaw Bay Fertilizer in Essexville.

Inside the powerhouse of the DE Karns Power plant owned by Consumers Energy We see the turbines for units 1 up front, and 2 hidden in the background. DE Karns has a total of I believe four units, with 1 and 2 being coal burners and 3/4 being far less efficient natural gas burners that were converted over from oil that came in via the famous GATX TankTrain. These units have either been shut down or are burning out their last ounces of coal over the next coming weeks as the last coal train was back in March. Consumers hosted a public open house and encouraged everyone to take photos.
In September 2022 Consumers energy offered a public outing and tour of their DE Karns (Essexville) Power Plant a few months before the end. Sometime in March Consumers dumped their last rail car through this rotary dumper. During the tour I was given permission to get a side tour of the rotary dumper and the loco shop even though rail operations were shut down this day it was nice to capture something that will most likely never be photographed again.
