While there is a decently famous job out of Great Falls, MT on the BNSF dubbed the same, I think Tuesday / Thursday's rendition of the MRF can take a run for that title as well. On these days, L594 takes the turn north at Wales up the Wales Branch, which DMIR used to get deep into Minnesota's north woods. Now, CN uses the branch to interchange with the Northshore Mining Railroad. There are only two crossings along the branch; this muddy dirt road and the highway between Two Harbors and Jordan.
On this day, DMIR 406 and CN 2027 bring bentonite hoppers back from the NSM interchange. Quite a few of these were BN hoppers, which was quite cool. The train is passing through McNair, MN, where if you look closely it seems there was a spur at one point, and now the switch has been ripped out. Luckily, the sun followed the train to this spot and came out not 30 seconds before this picture was taken. MRF would continue to trundle at a leisurely 10mph to Wales.
