Happiness is a warm gun

"Laughter on the edge of city chaos. 'Happiness is a Warm Gun' is a candid look at the tension between joy and urban life — soft human moments surrounded by a world that never stops moving."

Pushpamala N: India’s Entertaining Iconoclast

The Phantom Lady, the spirit of erotic love, the goddess of Time and Destruction, the Countess of Castiglione (here), and the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama… these are just some of the characters recreated and performed by the Indian artist Pushpamala N. As one of the country’s pioneers of conceptualism, her work has had a deep influence on contemporary art practice in India. A feminist and provocateur, she seeks to subvert the male-dominated cultural discourse. Interestingly, she rejects the notion of ‘authenticity’ – the idea that there is a single underlying truth – preferring instead to understand the world as having multiple realities depending on the perceptions and perspectives of the viewer.

You can see the photographic work of Pushpamala N. and follow her conversation with Alasdair Foster at Talking Pictures.

Barras Market, Glasgow

*** Find me on instagram as not.flickr *** Submitted for Flickr's Your Best Shot 2023 award in the Street category (January 2024)

The piano inside Barras Market often attracts children who give the keys a good bashing and everyone else a headache. Taking pictures for my Advanced Photography Level 3 course at Clyde College, I was lucky enough to be there when this lady sat down and started playing ‘Fix You’ by Coldplay. Soon others gathered around and joined in to sing the words. It was a lovely shared moment.

Research has shown that community singing is helps group bonding and improve our broader social networks - particularly valuable in today’s often alienating world, where many of our social interactions are conducted remotely online. For me, ‘Fix You’ is an emotionally moving song, too.

When you try your best, but you don't succeed
When you get what you want, but not what you need
When you feel so tired, but you can't sleep
Stuck in reverse

And the tears come streaming down your face
When you lose something you can't replace
When you love someone, but it goes to waste
Could it be worse?

Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you.

Songwriters: Chris Martin / Guy Berryman / William Champion / Jonathan Buckland
