EIFF - The Mortician 07

Iranian director (living in exile in Canada, Abdolreza Kahani, with the glasses and longer hair, and two of his main cast from Mortician, Nima Sadr(in the hat), who he has worked with before, and singer and actor Gola.

The film explores the life of the exile; even in a supposedly safe land like Canada, the reach of the authoritarian regime back home still haunts them, with threats to themselves but also to those they love who are still at the regime's mercy back home in Iran.

Shot on phones with a minimal cast and crew, it's interesting film-making with a strong, passionate point to make about real world concerns.

Nocturnal Filmhouse In Film Fest Mode

The Filmhouse cinema, with the front ground floor painted up for the 78th Annual Edinburgh International Film Festival this month.

Quick night shot using "Professor Bendylegs", the mini-tripod, sat on top of a handy junction box on the pavement (I didn't want to drag the full size tripod around the night streets as I was on my way to the film fest).

Only recently re-opened after a long campaign to save it after it suddenly closed a couple of years ago, I'm pleased to have the FH back, and to be watching film festival screenings in it once more.

I was off out early today for my next Edinburgh International Film Festival screening - one of my favourite segments I always try to catch, the short animation films.

Screened in the lovely, old Cameo Cinema, as usual the festival had several of the film-makers present, and they assembled after the screening for a quick chat with the audience.

One of them was quite a famous face you may know from numerous other films, from Empire Records to Bridget Jones - Renee Zellwegger (on the right, in the dapper cap). Renee was there as director of the short animated film, They.
