Yours truly in my room with a globe, lots of books and my grandfather's wooden old tube radio. Milford, CT. October 1972.

Speaking of that old 1950s radio, one thing I noticed is that when I placed my Panasonic radio/cassette recorder really close to my Granfather's Grundig and tuned both radios to the same frequency, it made faraway stations come in really exceptionally clear and loud during the nighttime using the bouncewaves off the ionosphere! I got hooked on airchecking and recording long-distance clear-channel 50,000 watt stations like WOWO in Fort Wayne, WCFL in Chicago, WKBW in Buffalo and of course, the Canadian powerhouse CKLW in Windsor, Ontario. I suspect that my grandfather's tuner somehow enhanced the signal when both devices were tuned to the same station and were in close proximity.

Just as an aside, this moment in time was taken on Kodacolor 126 cartridge film using a Kodak 104 Instamatic with a flash cube which make the indoor photo possible.

Note the "Slow Deaf Child" sign. Her name was Charlene, a neighbor of ours and she was really giggly. She could hear somewhat, but not very well. My parents asked the City of Milford to place the sign and they complied. In the background, you can see a 1970s car parked and across Merwin Avenue, the cedar wood fence of the Surf Club which existed from 1967 through closure in 1982.

Shot by yours truly with a Kodak X15 using a 126 cartridge of Kodak Verichrome Pan film.

When I shot this image, this place was a giant field of abandoned railroad land. The soil was contaminated with diesel fuel, PCBs and lord knows what else. As an adventurous 16-year-old, I enjoyed exploring this place and all the crumbling, disused old railroad infrastructure. In the distance center, the abandoned Central Railroad of New Jersey and its rusting train shed is visible. I can still recall the oily muck which passed for soil where the tracks once existed. A heavy scent of diesel fuel, rust and utter abandonment hung in the air.

This was my dream car for decades. When I saw someone selling a restored metallic blue one, I just HAD to buy it. After a test ride and some haggling, I got a fairly good deal. With a 400 cubic inch engine and a four-gear stick shift, power brakes and power steering, this was like being in automotive heaven! My sons loved being driven to school in this car - it drew an incredible amount of attention from their friends! (and even some from the teachers).

This photo was taken with my late and great 1985 Nikon FG SLR camera using Kodacolor II film.
