"'This is Your Life' recently on Channel 7 chose its subject Sydney cartoonist Jim Russell.
Following the show's customary stye, Jim was surprised by the entry of not only folk from his early years, but personalities associated with his widespread activities since: Cliff Sproule (tennis), Dawn Fraser (swimming), Sir Edgar Tanner (Olympics), Frank Stewart (ex-Minister for Tourism) and, most surprising of all, from Jim's Smith's Weekly days, his former cadet and Adelaide News cartoonist since 1949 (and Walkley Award winner), Norm Mitchell. Overcoming an air controllers' dispute, Norm had piloted his own light aircraft from Adelaide.
Mrs Kay Davison, one of the Black and White Artists Club pioneers of 40 years ago, was equally surprising.
Climax of the show was the mass entry of Jim's mates of today's Black and White Artists Club, who are pictured right:
(From left): Tony Hudson, Eric Jolliffe, Arthur Hudson (1966 Walkley Award winner), Dan Russell, Bill Pidgeon (Wep), Mrs Kay Davison, Bruce Cousin, Ron Melville, Les Dixon (Bluey & Curley), John Beverley, Jim Russell (just ceremonously 'smocked' by the Club), Max Foley, Doug Albion, Larry Pickerting (another Walkley Award winner), Tony Rafty and (kneeling) Ian Cox, Col Cameron and George Sprod.
Ralph Colville and John Ryan, Queenslander cartoon archivist, although there, didn't make this picture."
