The Postcard
A postcard bearing no publisher's name. The card also fails to name the church, which is in fact St. James's Church, North Cray, Kent.
The card was posted in Sidcup, Kent using a 2d. stamp on the 25th. November 1947. It was sent to:
Miss Underhay,
36, Ford Park Road,
Mutley,
Plymouth,
Devon.
The surname Underhay is a locational name meaning "beneath the enclosure." Historically concentrated in Devonshire, families of this name appeared in UK census records from 1840 onwards, with significant migration to Canada, Australia, and South Africa.
The message on the divided back of the card was as follows:
"34, The Grove,
N. Cray,
Sidcup,
Kent.
Tuesday: 25 . 11 . 47.
We went to church
on Sunday. This is it -
very nice and very
convenient.
We are returning to
P. W. next Tuesday
(2nd. Dec.) after I. has
inspected the presents
and wedding dress at
St. James's next Monday.
We had an excellent
view of the wedding
proceedings through
a television set in
complete comfort.
But full details of our
'goings on' must wait
until we see you.
Love from us both,
D."
34, The Grove is about half a mile from St. James's Church, and can be walked in about ten minutes.
The Royal Wedding of 1947
The sender of the card is referring to the Royal Wedding of 1947. Princess Elizabeth married Philip Mountbatten on the 20th. November 1947, at Westminster Abbey in London. The ceremony took place when she was 21 years old, with 2,000 guests in attendance.
Princess Elizabeth's wedding gifts were famously put on public display following her marriage to Prince Philip. The gifts were exhibited at St. James's Palace in London.
Between November 1947 and March 1948, more than 200,000 people visited the exhibition in order to view the presents.
The display was arranged in order to allow the public to share in the celebration, and to showcase the generosity of well-wishers from around the world, rather than keeping the gifts private.
Over 2,500 gifts were received, ranging from practical items (a Singer sewing machine and a fridge) to extravagant jewels, such as the Nizam of Hyderabad necklace containing 300 diamonds. A notable gift included 500 crates of canned pineapples from Queensland.
Princess Elizabeth's parents, Queen Elizabeth and King George VI, were behind her most expensive gift: the George VI Victorian Suite. It included a 19th.-century sapphire and diamond necklace and matching earrings. The jeweller Maxwell Stone noted:
"The King George VI Victorian Suite
is likely to be worth £5,000,000
(approximately $6.3 million)."
The Kenyan government gifted the couple a log cabin called the Sagana Lodge — it was at this cabin five years later on the 6th. February 1952 that Elizabeth learned that her father had died, and that she was to take the title of Queen Elizabeth.
Some of these gifts were displayed again in 2007 in order to mark the couple's Diamond Wedding Anniversary.
-- The Gandhi Gift
One of the simplest of Elizabeth’s wedding gifts, displayed alongside shelves of treasures, had a sting in the tail. It was a simple cotton lace cloth. While not as shiny as a glittering diadem, the cloth holds immense historical significance.
It was hand-spun by Mahatma Gandhi himself, and carried with it an embroidered message: “Jai Hind,” Hindi for “Victory for India.” This phrase can be interpreted as an anti-imperialist gesture.
It arrived at the palace only weeks after India had gained independence from British rule. Furthermore, the gift of a hand-spun cloth could suggest a critique of Britain’s suppression of the Indian textile industry.
-- Princess Elizabeth's Wedding Dress
In addition to the gifts, the princess's wedding dress was also put on display, and became a major attraction.
The princess wore a long-sleeved satin gown for her November 1947 wedding to Prince Philip.
Royal couturier Sir Norman Hartnell designed the elegant dress, which features a 15-foot train and 10,000 embroidered seed pearls.
21-year-old Princess Elizabeth used ration coupons in order to purchase materials for the dress, reflecting the austerity that postwar Britain faced.
The wedding dress remains one of the most intricate gowns in modern history. The elegant satin creation took 350 seamstresses and a host of wartime ration coupons to bring it to life.
Today, it remains one of the most expensive royal wedding gowns of all time—even beating Princess Diana’s lavish David and Elizabeth Emanuel creation when the cost is adjusted for inflation.
