St Monans noctilucent clouds - Faint whispers of noctilucent clouds above the harbour at St Monans.
We've been fortunate to have a number of vivid displays of noctilucent clouds over recent weeks. On a recent visit to Fife, I was lucky enough to catch some on a night over the quaint and picturesque fishing village of St Monans. Not quite the spectacular display seen a couple of nights earlier, but still, satisfying enough just to glimpse them.
Noctilucent (night shining) clouds, or to give them their correct name, polar mesospheric clouds, are the highest and rarest of all clouds, only visible for a few brief weeks around the summer solstice from certain latitudes. The UK is pretty much in the sweet spot for seeing these and this summer we've been treated to a number of excellent displays of them. Although still very rare, displays have been more frequent in recent years and the increasing frequency is believed to be another probable artefact of global warming.
