The construction in 963 of the castle by Sigefroi on the Bock rock marks the beginning of the history of the city of Luxembourg.
With increasingly rapid geographic and demographic growth from 1050 onwards, the city expanded and different enclosures surrounding the fortification were added. The accessibility of neighborhoods has been increased over the course of different industrial revolutions and urban planning progress.
The desire being to open up the Pfaffenthal and the adjacent valleys as well as to increase inter-district exchanges, a vertical link project by elevator and footbridge linking the Pfaffenthal and the Ville-Haute was proposed. In February 2009, the final project was approved by the municipal council of the City of Luxembourg.
Accessible from rue du Pont, the elevator climbs 80 meters, and the footbridge is 60 meters long before arriving at Pescatore Park. The elevator can support a maximum load of 5,000 kilograms. Travel time is 30 seconds.
It can hold up to 6 cyclists and 12 pedestrians.
Compared to the main tower, the walkway is built cantilevered and its glazed end offers a panoramic view. A crutch consolidates the span of the tower and the walkway, and tie rods had to be placed in the rock to solidify the anchoring of the structure in the rock
