Music Concourse

The Music Concourse, nestled between the de Young Museum and the California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park, is a historic open-air plaza that has served as a cultural and social gathering space since its creation in the late 19th century. Designed as part of the 1894 Midwinter Exposition, this sunken, tree-lined concourse remains a beloved destination for visitors seeking art, music, and nature.

The concourse is marked by its rows of neatly pruned pollarded trees, creating a formal yet inviting atmosphere. These trees provide much-needed shade and complement the European-inspired design of the plaza. At the heart of the concourse stands a grand fountain, providing a tranquil backdrop to the bustling life of the park. Surrounding the concourse are numerous green benches, offering a perfect spot for contemplation, people-watching, or simply enjoying the ambiance.

Architecturally, the Music Concourse is anchored by the iconic Spreckels Temple of Music, a grand Beaux-Arts style bandstand that has hosted countless performances, from classical music concerts to community events. Donated by sugar magnate Claus Spreckels in 1899, the temple is an enduring symbol of San Francisco’s commitment to the arts.

The plaza’s central location, flanked by two of the city's most important cultural institutions, underscores its historical importance as a cultural hub in Golden Gate Park. Today, the Music Concourse continues to be a vibrant space, where locals and tourists alike can enjoy performances, art, and the beauty of this meticulously designed public space.

Atlantic Coast Line Float is seen in the yearly Festival Of States Parade that is held along Central Avenue route while heading west during this time period in Saint Petersburg, Florida, 1955

Atlantic Coast Line Float is seen in the yearly Festival Of States Parade that is held along Central Avenue route while heading west during this time period in Saint Petersburg, Florida, 1955. Was able to observe many of these parades, including this one while I was living in the downtown area. These parades are no longer held, but back in their day they were a big trade mark for the City of Saint Petersburg, plus it was a good way to advertise all of the local businesses, attractions, the city, along with bringing in high school bands from various states across the nation and their accompanying people to introduce them to the area. At this time the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad provided a float in the parade because the railroad still provided very good civilized transportation services to the area, and they did OK by adding the pretty young ladies to their float. Always did wonder who these young ladies may actually be, because they may have been daughters of local ACL officials? The vehicle that is hauling the float is interesting, but I don't recall what it actually is in respect to brand and model, but perhaps is a Willys? Use to dine in the Trade Winds Bar & Grill on a regular basis because it was a good restaurant. The historic Detroit Hotel is seen in the view.

Do not know the name of the photographer that captured this image on film. This is a modified and enhanced scan from an original slide in my collection.

Central Avenue streetcar

A Birney streetcar plies its way along Central Avenue, St. Pete, passing Snell Arcade (still extant) in this late-1920s view. A large crowd of folk have made themselves comfortable on the green sidewalk benches that once characterised the city. St. Pete bid farewell to its streetcars in 1948.

Blue deck chairs on stadium benches in San Francisco park 20170523-175307 C4

I saw these blue chairs from far away and Melody and I were walking from a park parking lot to the clubhouse for a community meeting. I thought it interesting that these blue chairs were sitting on benches. There were several distracting items such as poles and fences so I walked around until I was able to compose this image using my Canon Powershot SX50.

Islamorada Fire Rescue Station No. 20 (4 of 4)

On February 1, 2008, while on a two day Bus Trip to see the remnants of the Florida East Coast Railway's former Key West Extension, we stopped in Ilamorada, Florida, at the Memorial for the lives lost during the 1935 Labor Day Category 5 Hurricane, which also destroyed the FEC Railway Extension to Key West, Florida.

Across the road from the Memorial, I found the Bernard Russell Emergency Operations Center, which is also known as Fire Rescue Station Number 20, so I decided to create the Photo Essay presented here on flickr™. Further information about the demise of the FEC Overseas Railway can be found at:

Naw I am kidding the h**e was already there. All I did was, I used it to try to fuss up a photographic composition in the "Nice Compo" type of style. I'm getting big into the hobby!
