Golden Bandit

A male baglafecht weaver (Ploceus baglafecht) in Kenya. I think it looks like a cute masked bandit. The female has an all black head.

We met them several places- both in towns, by the mountain roads and in lush areas of the savanna.

They are found in eastern and central Africa.

Orange Beauty

A white-browed robin-chat (Cossypha heuglini) in Kenya this past autumn. (It was formerly known as Heuglin's Robin, named after the German ornithologist Von Heuglin.)

It belongs to the flycatcher family, and there are some other species that looks very similar- but this has a little wider eye stripe, and fits the best with the area.

It is found in east, central and southern Africa.

Gorgeous Cuckoo by Ranveig Marie Photography

Gorgeous Cuckoo

A beautiful memory from Kenya this past autumn - seeing a (female) Klaas's cuckoo (Chrysococcyx klaas) for the first time.

The cuckoos look so much more beautiful there than in Europe. (The male of this species has plain white underparts and glossy green(er) upperparts.)

The species was named by French explorer François Le Vaillant in 1806, in recognition of his local servant and assistant, named Klaas.

The species is native to the wooded regions of sub-Saharan Africa.

Brides & Grooms

Sadly I haven't been able to photograph weddings this year due to my health, but I still have many wedding photos I have been allowed to use that I haven't showed yet.

Here is a couple from two years ago, in the town where I live.

Check out more photos of them and two other couples in the links below the line!

Little Leopard by Ranveig Marie Photography

Little Leopard

Finally my dream came true last month, to see and photograph a leopard in a tree with a kill.

I can only remember to have seen the back of a leopard in the grass before, in South Africa.

This leopard cub was eating on a large newly killed impala, that its mother had brought up in the tree. (I will show photos of it eating later on, I just started with the cutest of the photosッ)

The mother was resting in the grass below the tree, but I didn't spot her.

The Pygmy Cormorants by Ranveig Marie Photography

© Ranveig Marie Photography, all rights reserved.

The Pygmy Cormorants

There were many pygmy cormorants (Microcarbo pygmaeus) and Eurasian spoonbills sharing a big tree for nesting out on Lake Kerkini in Greece in May.

They kept to themselves, while the rest of the similar species there (various herons and great cormorants) nested together in lots of other trees.

The pygmy cormorants breed in south-eastern Europe and south-western Asia.

The Leopard Of The Air by Ranveig Marie Photography

© Ranveig Marie Photography, all rights reserved.

The Leopard Of The Air

I photographed at least 5 eagle species in Masai Mara last summer, of very different appearances - from brown to very white, to colourful, to this one.

This is the martial eagle (Polemaetus bellicosus) - Africa's largest eagle with a wingspan that stretches up to 2.6 m (bigger than our largest white-tailed eagle in Norway).

It is is one of the world's most powerful avian predators. Due to both its underside spotting and ferocious efficiency as a predator it is sometimes nicknamed "the leopard of the air".

In its common, scientific and most regional African names, its name means "war-like" and indicates the force, brashness and indefatigable nature of their hunting habits.

The Rose-Ringed Parakeet by Ranveig Marie Photography

© Ranveig Marie Photography, all rights reserved.

The Rose-Ringed Parakeet

From my first time seeing a couple of rose-ringed parakeets (Psittacula krameri) in the wild, in the old town of Thessaloniki in February.

They are native to Africa and the Indian subcontinent, but have been introduced to many other parts of the world for exotic pet trade, where fugitives have established themselves in the wild.

Considering Greece, the first parakeets in downtown Athens appeared in the late 1980s.

A New Acquaintance

I am editing photos from the last three months, to show at the bird club tonight.

Many of them are from Greece, including this pygmy cormorant (Microcarbo pygmaeus).

We don't have them in Norway, and it was my first time seeing them. The few we saw on Lake Kerkini, looked adorable compared to the thousands of great cormorants there.

The Bateleur by Ranveig Marie Photography

© Ranveig Marie Photography, all rights reserved.

The Bateleur

I've posted lots of Norwegian eagles lately, but here is one from Kenya.

It's called bateleur (Terathopius ecaudatus), which is French for "street performer". The word is also used for line dancers, and the bird gets its name from the way it adjusts its wings from side to side as if trying to keep its balance while floating in the air.

It is classified as an endangered species due primarily to anthropogenic causes such as habitat destruction, pesticide usage and persecution.

I don't know if it built a nest in this tree, or if it brought branches from it to build one another place, but it flew away with one of the large branches it stood on, and started to fight with another bateleur in the air.

We saw them many times in the air, but only this time on the ground.
