Metra in Hainesville

SD70MACH, METX 500 leads the 2615 through the city of Hainesville with the next station stop of Round Lake. I find it very cool to have these SD70MACs rebuilt into commuter service, cool enough I spent the 4th of July weekend trying to find sun along the Milwaukee North District.

The Civil War Field Surgeon's Instruments

Seen at a U.S. Civil War reenactment last autumn

According to "The Journal of Antiques and Collectibles," Union surgeons during the war "were issued all-purpose surgical sets outfitted for an array of battlefield injuries. Along with amputation instruments, these typically included trephines, retractors, bullet extractors, razors, forceps, along with lancets, tourniquets, tweezers, bone gougers, hooks, probes, scalpels, surgical razors, suturing needles, and wedge-shaped Hey's Saws, useful in skull surgery."

Smoky Traveler

It doesn't always happen, but occasionally when an American Civil War-era cannon is fired, it creates a visible ring of smoke that travels far across a field before it dissipates. This one appeared at a Civil War reenactment event that I attended this fall.

Confederates

Processed in a vintage style, it's a shot of reenactors in the role of confederate troops during a recent U.S. Civil War reenactment in Hainesville, Illinois. A mock battle had just been completed, and they were at ease prior to filing off the field.

A regiment of Union troop reenactors pause to reload during a mock battle at a U. S. Civil War reenactment in Hainesville, Illinois, last weekend. The background beyond the trees is obscured by smoke from cannon fire that was filling the air.

General Grant? by Wes Iversen

General Grant?

During a U.S. Civil War reenactment that I attended this fall, this white-haired gentleman was playing the role of Ulysses S. Grant, the commanding general of the Union forces who later became the 18th president of the United States. This was despite the fact that he looks little like the photos that I've seen of Grant taken during the war years. The fellow officer with the dark beard that he is talking with here actually looked more like Grant, IMO.

Nonetheless, the Grant reenactor cut a very imposing figure and played the role well, spending time in the padded armchair under the awning of a larger and more luxurious tent than those used by the reenactors portraying Union troops.

Reenactors portraying Confederate soldiers in the U.S. Civil War form a rank following a mock battle at an October reenactment in Hainesville, Illinois. A column of Union reenactors can be seen in the background marching back to their campground.

...in this case, there's a battery of Union cannons having just fired rounds during a U.S. Civil War reenactment on a sunny autumn day in Hainesville, Illinois.

Flickr friends, I've been offline for a few days and will likely be off and on for a while yet during some busy times at our house. On days that I post, I'll do my best to catch up with your latest images.

...sort of. But it doesn't look as though it would provide much protection.

But then, these folks are not in an actual battle. They are reenactors portraying Confederate soldiers during a mock battle at an American Civil War reenactment last autumn in Hainesville, Illinois.

Battle Weary II

This shot is a different version of a photo of some Civil War reenactors that I posted a couple of weeks ago. At that time, I couldn't decide which version I liked best, and since today is Thursday, it seemed like a good time to post this alternate version for the Thursday Monochrome group.

These men, portraying Union soldiers, had just finished a mock battle during an American Civil War reenactment event last fall in Hainesville, Illinois. I've added the other version of this image in the first comments box, for any who are interested. Feel free to let me know which you prefer.

Abe Was There by Wes Iversen

Abe Was There

Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States from 1861 until his assassination in 1865. Lincoln led the nation through the American Civil War and succeeded in preserving the Union, so naturally, he was at the Civil War reenactment that I attended last weekend.

The fellow who played him, seen chatting here with an attendee, was one of several speakers at the event. He was incredibly knowledgable about the Civil War era, answering unscripted questions from the audience as Lincoln would have answered, while never missing a beat.

It was a breezy day with the flag flapping back and forth, and it took me multiple tries to get a shot with the flag in the center with both men visible. But on my seventh try... Success! 😋

Victory Won - Explored

As the smoke begins to clear, Union troops assemble following a mock battle during an American Civil War reenactment event this past weekend in Hainesville, Illinois. The Union prevailed over the Confederate troops. And yes, those are Confederate soldiers on the ground in the foreground, playing dead as victims of the mock battle.
