More ancient history from a trip to the Big Island of Hawaii. The Outrigger Canoes were captured in Pu’uhaonua o Honaunau which is the ‘place of refuge’ or ‘city of refuge’ on the Kona coast. It was a place of safe haven in ancient times for those who broke the laws that were punishable by death. If you could reach Pu’uhonau, then you could be given a second chance at life and be pardoned. The canoes were on display in one of the Hālau (a shelter for canoes) on the Royal Grounds of Pu’uhonua.
I am no expert as far as wood is concerned, but the two Outriggers on the left appear to be made of Koa wood which is quite expensive, and they would be priceless works of art today.
