Waiting for the Rain...

A 'plague' of froglets waiting around the edges of my pond until rain comes, which will allow them safer passage to the wider world. In the meantime I hope the local blackbirds don't find them or they'll all be gobbled up.

Whoopeeee!

I find something quite comical about beetles in flight, in this case garden chafers (Phyllopertha horticola) but the joke's on me given that they are amongst the most successful types of animal life on the planet. These are 2 separate beetles, part of a swarm of them, rather than a montage of one individual. Several others are visible in the photo although completely out of focus.

Back Garden Buzzard

Five minutes ago while I was sorting photos in my study I saw a buzzard land outside around 3m from where I was sitting. I presume it was a youngster attempting a first flight, as there was no reason at all for it to perch on a railing in the garden. I had the camera in its bag and very slowly got it out and took a photo or two before it flapped off into the woods behind our house. A brief but wonderful encounter.

Garden Visitor

Very pleased to be dropped in on by the UK's largest jumping spider, the fencepost jumper (Marpissa mucosa). Body length c12mm. Restricted to southern England I have not found one in our garden before, but they do occur on chalk grassland nearby. Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire

Common Frogs (Rana temporaria) rather than their close relatives the Moor Frog (Rana arvalis) in which the entire body of the male turns the same powder blue as the male common frog's throat.

Love Island...

A pile of comomn frogs (Rana temporaria) with females aiming to place their spawn on top of the raft made previously by other females, thereby gaining more exposure to the sun and less danger of their spawn sinking to the cooler bottom of the pond.
