Seen here dropping away from the diminutive Yarnbrook viaduct, Powerhaul liveried 70016 is about to start the climb to Westbury North Junction with a late-running 4O57 13:29 Wentloog (Cardiff) to Southampton Maritime Freightliner container working. This train usually runs daily from Tuesday to Friday.
The loadings on this flow are best described as erratic with the leading pocket wagons often left empty so it was nice to be able to capture this train with an almost complete load of containers. The class 70 locomotives would appear to be back in favour on this working following a period of predominantly class 66 operation. Now a welcome photographic interlude from the local aggregate traffic, this working was re-routed via the Avon valley and Wylye valley routes several years ago following track lowering work at Dundas aqueduct which had previously precluded such traffic from being sent this way.
The railings found in several places along the embankment here mark the areas where piles have been driven into the ground to stabilise the formation as the earthworks on this section of line have proved problematic for many years. This is evidenced by the location case towards the middle of the train leaning over at an unusual angle.
