The Battery

East Bay Street looking South from Water Street

"The Battery is a landmark defensive seawall and promenade in Charleston, South Carolina. Named for a pre-Civil War coastal defense artillery battery originally built by the British at the site, it stretches along the lower shores of the Charleston peninsula, bordered by the Ashley and Cooper Rivers, which meet here to form Charleston Harbor.

LOCATION
Historically, it has been understood to extend from the beginning of the seawall at the site of the former Omar Shrine Temple (40-44 East Bay Street) to the intersection of what is now Murray Boulevard and King Street. The higher part of the promenade, paralleling East Battery, as the street is known south of Water Street, to the intersection of Murray Boulevard, is known as High Battery. Fort Sumter is visible from the Cooper River side (High Battery) and from the point, as are Castle Pinckney, the World War II aircraft carrier USS Yorktown (CV-10), Fort Moultrie, and Sullivan's Island.

In popular speech and in a number of unofficial guidebooks and Web sites, The Battery and White Point Garden are sometimes referred to as "Battery Park," but the park and seawall promenade are not regarded by the City of Charleston as a single entity, and the term "Battery Park" is not an official designation." Paris France ~ Le Passage des Princes ~ Former Arcade

Despite the transformations of Paris operated by Baron Haussmann, which caused many passages to disappear, a decree of 3 September 1860 authorized the opening of this passage. It was the last covered passage built in Paris at the time of Haussmann.

The banker Jules Mirès bought the "Grand Hotel of the Princes and of Europe", a palace located 97 rue de Richelieu, as well as a plot for the construction of a passage constituting a shortcut for pedestrians. It was a gallery with a rather simple decoration surmounted by a double-sloped canopy with rhythm on each span by double metal arches forming arabesques. The passage was inaugurated in 1860, under the name of passage Mirès, and was appreciated at the time for its appearance of good taste and its spacious character. Shortly after the opening of the passage, the company Jules Mirès went bankrupt, and by 1866 the passage became the property of the life insurance company, which had since become the AGF. Between 1879 and 1883, the gallery of La Vie moderne, founded by Georges Charpentier, was opened at the corner of the passage on the Boulevard des Italiens, where most of the Impressionists
