A display of an 18th century dress complements a recreation of a Georgian home living room, complete with a painting of Wantage Market Square as it was at the time.

A small gallery of items illustrating the life and times of King Alfred, born in Wantage, occupies part of the attic area of the Vale & Downland Museum.

Perched above the village, it was both a strategic fortress and a symbol of feudal power. Though it’s seen sieges, renovations, and centuries of change, it still commands breathtaking views over the Roussillon plain — and now houses a curious cast of silent inhabitants in costume, keeping the spirit of its medieval past alive.
