St Stephen's Basilica is a Roman Catholic basilica in Budapest, Hungary. It is named in honour of Szent István (Saint Stephen), the first king of Hungary, whose mummified right hand is kept in a reliquary. The church was designed in the neoclassical style by József Hild. In 1858, the dome collapsed, and the completed work had to be completely demolished and rebuilt from scratch. After Hild died in 1867, the project was handed over to Miklós Ybl, who modified Hild's original plan into a more neo-Renaissance style. Construction began in 1851 and continued for fifty-four years. It was completed in 1905 by József Kauser.
Along with the Hungarian Parliament, it is one of the two tallest buildings in Budapest at 96 metres (315 ft) - an equation symbolizing the equal importance of secular and spiritual thought. For a long time, regulations prohibited the construction of any building taller than 96 metres in Budapest.
