The famous Aït Benhaddou, a fortified village (a ksar or ighrem) along the old caravan route between Marrakech and ancient Sudan through the Sahara Desert. It's been a fortified site since the 11th century. The current buildings are much more recent, but they still serve as a wonderful example of pre-Saharan earthen building techniques. The structures have been kept architecturally intact and authentic as it's a UNESCO World Heritage Site - and a frequent setting for Hollywood! You may have seen it in anything from Game of Thrones to Gladiator to Time Bandits. (Composite panorama.)
