The city of Calgary is still under serious water use restrictions, not expected to end any time soon. The first day of the disastrous water main break was 5 June 2024.
Three days ago, on 20 June 2024, Summer Solstice, I spent several enjoyable hours driving the backroads SE of Calgary. There were three or four areas or locations that I wanted to revisit, mainly old barns. I hadn't really thought about getting as far as Mossleigh, but with a sky full of clouds, it seemed the right kind of day to photograph the three beautiful old grain elevators.
My day started off with a spur-of-the-moment stop at two of my favourite old barns. Just a quick few photos and off I went, driving further southwards. Once I left the highway, I was free to explore quite a few of the rough, gravel back roads. It was a good feeling knowing that I had finally got my winter tires taken off my car the day before, plus an inspection of my vehicle.
One road I drove along had such a great variety of birds, including a Swainson's Hawk, that stayed on its fence post just long enough for me to get two shots through the windscreen, which, as usually happens, with an unpleasant greenish tinge. Most Swainson's that I see tend to stay around longer. Other birds seen along this road were several Eastern Kingbirds, including one that was actually perched in a tree, not on a fence post or balancing on barbed-wire. I was happy to see a Western Meadowlark, too, especially as it stayed for a while. The best sighting along this road was when I noticed a teeny white speck on the fence way down the road. Couldn't tell what it was until I zoomed in on my camera. To my delight, it was a Loggerhead Shrike. I knew that it would fly off if I got anywhere near to it, so I made do with a zoomed shot.
A quick stop at a favourite location of mine turned up a Yellow-headed and a Red-winged Blackbird, plus a few more Eastern Kingbirds. Only saw two Vesper Sparrows all day.
Hoping that the sky would not change too much before I eventually reached the hamlet of Mossleigh and its row of grain elevators, I enjoyed taking a few photos of these impressive oldies.
An absolute favourite old barn was my last stop before heading home. The clouds were less impressive by the time I reached the spot, but at least there were a few white ones.
That's it for our 15th year of Arachtober! Can you believe it's been going that long? It started here on Flickr, but now you can find it on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. I'm impressed and delighted that our little project is spreading spider knowledge and appreciation and overcoming fear.
I posted a similar photo a few days ago, but I like them both and felt this one made a good finale. It surprises me how a slight difference in lighting can change the mood.
Thanks to all of you for participating, be it through adding your own photos or simply commenting and appreciating and showing the spiders some love. Happy Halloween!

Everywhere you go in Madurai you'll find small vivacious street markets. Farmers bringing their goods to the big city.
So if you have an onion soup today, you can use this one as a background apetizer :)).
A lot of these old ladies stay very active life long, their long life !
One of my personal favorites, I hope you enjoy this one too.
Taken early morning.
Indeed what looks ordinary at first, you can present it up to your personal impression.
After all a camera can't read your mind, feel or mood you had at the spot, no ?
Isn't life a chaine of illusions along your mood ? Let me share one of mine ....

Shortly after 6am on Thursday we were woken up by the distinct smell of burning. It was thick and strong and there was a definite smoky haze upstairs. After quickly running around to make sure it wasn't within our own apartment, we heard sirens - lots of them - and a helicopter, just a little way down the street. Yup, there was a LOT of smoke and a quick check on TV showed the 'Breaking News' footage - one of our favourite cheap & cheerful neighbourhood restaurants, Topanga Cafe, was burning down just a block and a half down the road, along with the two stores next to it :-( Topanga's been a Vancouver staple since I moved here in '96. Not a single thing in that place had changed in years (possibly forever) and we liked it for that. Just a good old local restaurant for California-style Mexican comfort food. Whenever we don't feel like cooking, Topanga Cafe has been one of our go-to places for a tasty no frills dinner. We've even tried several times to get an apartment in the building seen to the left (and somewhat scorched) in this photo, the same building in the footage where you see the firefighters on the rooftop deck battling the blaze. In fact, for 4 years we lived in the building directly opposite. globalnews.ca/video/4314073/massive-fire-destroys-popular...
So sad to see this old place and the neighbouring couple of stores raized to the ground, especially bad for the tenants who lived in the couple of apartments above it. They lost everything! In fact their video games, armchairs, DVDs etc. are strewn across this mess, scattered among the burnt embers of a Kitsilano institution - one of the few rustic places left around here. I'm really sorry for the people who lived and worked here, so this is my sad but fond farewell. So long Topanga Cafe, we'll miss you keeping things real and refreshingly unpretentious here in Kitsilano.
