Jallikattu Woman

Palamedu - Jallikattu day
I would like to call her the Jallikattu Woman as all her live she was witnessing the Jallikattu Festival at 100m from her door, all dressed up with her golden Thandati for the event as a proud farmers woman. I fear that neither she nor all farmers around would accept a ban claimed by a tiny group not knowing how life on the countryside is and how people are close to their animals, working together to maintain a living . Should an animal be more protected then the life of 80% of common people. What if farmers start to protest claiming their Pongal tradition by refusing to bring food on your table ?

A proud Thevar woman ... miendum jallikattil paartoom (see you again next jallikattu)

Lines of life - Madurai

On the market in center Madurai, she was selling her tiny crop to passengers ...

I was caught by her face, so much stories chisseld by time.

PS Look at her ear ... once she wore a heavy jewel called Thandeti.

Emancipation - Madurai

I noticed this woman smoking on the street, for the first time in 15 years I saw a Tamil woman smoking in public, I was really surprised.

On top you see her scarf with a design mostly used by men only and the political sign you see everywhere in this area behind the Muslim Mosque ....
I suppose this area is marked by some more revolutionary idea's like ...... emancipation.

Smoking injuries health but if you do, enjoy it !

Holy smoke !!! - Madurai

Madurai Market

As if she couldn't get enough of it - and me neither - she let herself almost suffocate by the holy smoke out of believe and devotion while this young man was blessing her and her business for a few coins here on the central vegatable market of the city.

A rich 'Onion Lady' ....
PS
the man's shirt, newly ironned straight from the closet, often seen here.

A late breakfast - Madurai

Madurai
I was up already very early to go to the market and returning back I had suddenly a raging hunger.
She was sitting here right in front of a local Mosque. The smell of her kitchen and her joy charmed me so much that I sat down and had a quick breakfast. A rice pancake, the same paste like for idly, with honey ... marvelous and for five Roepies she said .... some coins felt beside in her hand. A fine apetizing morning, really cozy like sitting at mothers table.

You see her fanning the fire with a blow pipe.

Madurai - Brushes

Madurai - city
Like you could see that lady with itcham or grass on her head, you see here a sales woman with brushes made from this itcham grass.
They use to sprinkle water in the morning in front of their houses to reduce the dust and sand entering their home but dust is everywhere ... always handy to have a brush in the house . (from dust to dust you experience best in Madurai ...)
Members of the political party ADMK passed here also leaving their trail on this freshly painted wall for Pongal, Festival of the harvest (15 January).

Bending all day • Tirumohur - Madurai - countryside

The whole family works on the rice-fields harvesting but most part of the workers are women, the whole day bended like this, a very intensive hard work.

A lot of farmers have left their land for the city due to the increasing drought of the weather here. The only way to get more water besides all the boreholes or wells depends on the investments of dams by the government. Only the extended reserves dams retrieving water from the hills can make farmers to survive on their land. The provision of water around Chennai is out rising compared to the South of Tamil Nadu, half way Chennai-Madurai you see the increasing dry lands.

With her sickle she was standing like in a sea of gold,
cutting the gold of Tamil Nadu.

Maybe less info by the tight frame, focussing on the profile of this woman, but it still depicts the religious wind blowing here.

Kannier Bakthi - Madapuram

Tears of Devotion

30 km outside Madurai city there is a small temple called Pathirakaliyaman at Madappuram, so much liked by women to pray there to the God Ayenaar sitting on a horse.

Women are offering lemmon and pray with small oil lamps
in the morning from 10.30 till 12.30 specially on Fridays.

The woman was putting her whole life in the hands of God, the sadness and the joy, then she smiled, then she cried .....

... how many of us dare still to express their deep devotion, how many of us still have a believe ?

Let the fool tell you that religion has no value ...

Getting ready for marriage. by Henk oochappan

Getting ready for marriage.

I had to intend to two marriages, one in Kilamatuur and one in Chettiyapatti.
Not so pleasant as a foreigner pulling too much the attention and as soon you show your camera all children and so called local actors want to have their photo.
Ok I survived the loudspeakers and the too much attention, skipping the food looking around.

And while she was dressing up in a nearby house they allowed me to picture the nice decorations on her hands made with stickers.

Ain't she got also a nice blue colored Sari ?
Her beauty preserving for her husband.

Itcham

I was heading for my breakfast while I saw her walking with a bunch of grass used to make brushes. (Itcham is the Tamil name for this kind of grass.)

While she was talking to some other boys, I walked by and waited till she passed me to take my chance.

Satisfied I went to Supreme across the street and enjoyed my coffee while looking at her, maybe you like her too ?

Street kitchen

You enjoy malligai poo idly and kurumaand and as you can see here a pancake and fried eggs served on a banana leaf.

Don't be afraid to eat here as it is prepared at the spot while in restaurants food is sometimes prepared a long time before. So if you're hungry, take a seat and join the ladies.

Her street kitchen was in the small streets leading to the big center-market.

Enjoy your snack.
