International Harvester, manufacturer of International Trucks, was once a powerhouse in agricultural and commercial equipment, but after years of financial struggles, it underwent a major transformation. The company was originally formed in 1902 through the merger of several manufacturers, including Deering Harvester Company and McCormick Harvesting Machine Company. The latter was built on the world-changing invention of the McCormick reaper in 1831.
By the 1980s, International Harvester faced economic difficulties and began selling off its divisions. In 1984, it sold its agricultural equipment division to Tenneco, which merged it with Case Corporation to form Case IH, a brand that still exists today. The remaining truck and engine manufacturing business was reorganized as Navistar International in 1986, marking the end of the International Harvester name.
Navistar continued producing International Trucks, and in 2020, Volkswagen agreed to fully acquire Navistar. So, while International Harvester as a company no longer exists, its legacy lives on through Navistar and Case IH. Quite the journey for a brand that once revolutionized American agriculture.
