The Mini was introduced in 1959 with the basic shape remaining little change until its demise in 2000.
From the advent of the Austin Metro in 1980 British Leyland and their successor the Rover Group tended to concentrate on the newer car despite sales of the Mini remaining strong. But 1981 was the last year that the Mini appeared in the top ten best selling UK car.
The Mark VI ran for model years 1990-96 With the larger Metro being redesigned in 1990 to take the new K-Series engine, the Mini became the sole recipient of the classic A-Series engine with transmission-in-sump layout. The engine mounting points were moved forward to take 1275-cc power units. An internal bonnet release was fitted in 1992
The Italian Job special edition was released in October 1992, inspired by the 1969 film of the same name, the cars were styled to look like the Coopers though they only produced 50bhp. The cars were based on the current Mini Mayfair and all were powered by a 50bhp 1275cc A Series engine. They came in a choice of four colours, the Flame Red, Diamond White and Electric Blue to reflect the three cars in the film, plus British Racing Green, exterior trim featured Bonnet stripes, Italian Job; badge, crossed Italian and British flag decals, body coloured wing mirrors, white grilles and black bumpers. The interiors were finished in black tweed, a three spoked steering wheel with the Italian flag on the centre boss and front seats. Additionally cars had tinted glass twin driving lamps and opening rear quarter windows.
