The Museo del Novecento ("Museum of the twentieth century") is a museum of twentieth-century art in Milan, in Lombardy in northern Italy. It is housed in the Palazzo dell'Arengario, near Piazza del Duomo in the centre of the city.
The Museum opened in December 2010. It displays about 400 works, most of them Italian, from the twentieth century.
Apart from a single room housing works by foreign artists including Braque, Kandinsky, Klee, Léger, Matisse, Mondrian and Picasso, the majority of the works exhibited in the museum are by Italian artists. A significant section highlights Italian Futurists, showcasing works by Giacomo Balla, Umberto Boccioni, Carlo Carrà, Fortunato Depero, Luigi Russolo, Gino Severini, Mario Sironi and Ardengo Soffici. Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo's large canvas Il Quarto Stato (1902) was exhibited in a room on its own, until 2022.
Other sections of the museum are dedicated to individual artists such as Giorgio de Chirico, Lucio Fontana and Morandi. There are also sections devoted to art movements of the twentieth century, including Abstractionism, Arte Povera, the Novecento Italiano, Post-Impressionism and Realism, and to genres such as landscape and monumental

Erection of the obelisk at Saint Peter Square, Vatican Museums

Sale Sistine II adorned with a mural fresco depicting the erection of the obelisk at Saint Peter's Square - Hall of Papal Archives - Domenico Fontana.
The history of the St. Peter's Square Obelisk is a fascinating journey that spans thousands of years. The obelisk at St. Peter's Square originated in ancient Egypt during the 13th century BC, under the rule of Pharaoh Seti I. It was carved out of red granite and stood tall in the city of Heliopolis, serving as a sacred monument dedicated to the sun god Ra. In 37 AD, Emperor Caligula ordered the obelisk to be transported from Egypt to Rome to enhance the splendor of the Circus of Nero.
The challenging task of moving the massive structure required ingenious engineering, and it was eventually re-erected in the center of the circus. Centuries later, in the 16th century, Pope Sixtus V initiated a grand plan to redesign St. Peter's Square and elevate its magnificence. He envisioned the obelisk of St. Peter's Square as the focal point of the new layout, symbolizing the triumph of Christianity over paganism.
In 1586, under the guidance of architect Domenico Fontana, the obelisk was carefully relocated to its current position in St. Peter's Square. This intricate operation involved the use of a complex system of pulleys and manpower. The St. Peter's Square Obelisk now stands majestically at the heart of Vatican City, reaching a height of approximately 25 meters (83 feet).

1988, Alighiero Boetti, Today the Nineteenth Day of the Eighth Month of the Year OneThousandNine100Eighty-Eight -- National Gallery of Art (Washington)

From the museum label:

Alighiero Boetti (1940-1994) was a major figure of international conceptualism and one of the leading artists associated with the Arte Povera movement in Italy. The artist's most iconic works are the embroideries he began to produce in Afghanistan in 1971 and later in Pakistan after the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979. Boetti worked with Afghan women embroiderers to produce three types of work: Arazzi (word-square tapestries), Mappi (maps), and Tutti (representations of "everything").

An example of the artist's Arazzi, Oggi diciannovesimo giorno ottavo mese dell'anno millenove1000ttantotto (Today the Nineteenth Day of the Eighth Month of the Year One Thousand Nine100Eighty-Eight), is comprised of 25 rows of Latin letters combined with four texts in Farsi, the spoken language of the work's fabricators, who were then living in exile in Peshawar. Boetti determined the layout of the letters, which contain messages in Italian and English and are generally organized into 4 x 4 grids. The embroiderers selected the color scheme and the Farsi texts that reference their names, the equine game of buzkashi (the national sport of Afghanistan, "land of the horse-riders"), and Afghan Independence Day. The work is a recent acquisition and the first by Boetti to enter the National Gallery collection.

1974, Mario Merz, Boards with Legs become Tables -- Kroller-Muller Museum (Otterlo)

From the museum label: On a canvas that resembles a wall-filling fresco, Mario Merz draws a series of increasingly larger tables. In his titles, Merz often plays with the sound of words and with the fact that they may have several meanings. 'Tavola' and 'tavolo' refer both to tangible materials - the wooden board (tavola) and the table (tavolo) - and to immaterial numerical sequences, such as the Fibonacci series, in which the next number is produced by adding the previous two together. The enlargement of the tables continues expansively according to this mathematical series of numbers.
