The Belmonte Synagogue is a symbol of the resistance and faith of Portuguese Jews who kept their religious identity a secret for centuries. It was inaugurated in 1996, the same year as the 500th anniversary of King Manuel I's decree expelling the Jews from Portugal. The synagogue is named Bet Eliahu after a Jewish benefactor who financed its construction. It is oriented towards Jerusalem, the holy city of Judaism, and welcomes members of the Belmonte Jewish Community, which was legally established in 1988.

GUNZENHAUSEN 2

This is the door into an outhouse that was formerly used as a laundry at a house in Gunzenhausen, Bavaria, Germany. My wife's family - the Lehmann family - lived in the house very happily until the rise of the Nazis in the 1930s. They were hop dealers and owners of a thriving business selling textiles and haberdashery and were well respected in Gunzenhausen with Ernst, my wife's grandfather, serving on the town council. That all changed, almost overnight, with pogroms, antisemitism and violent Jew hatred. The family escaped to England, Argentina, Brazil, Kenya and British Mandate Palestine never to be re-united. When members of the Lehmann family visited Gunzenhausen in the mid 1960s, twenty years or so after the war, they recognised many people who took part in the destruction of the Jewish community living their lives as if nothing had happened.

GERTRUD LEHMAN 1

Gertrud Lehman, photographed in circa 1935, probably in her home town of Gunzenhausen, Bavaria, Germany. She's the sister of Ilse Lehman - later Ilse Lateman - the mother of my wife, Carole Dena Lateman, and my sister-in-law Hazel Ruth Green. Gertrud escaped from Germany in the late 1930s and went to Palestine (where she served in the Haganah), and then to New York where she married Eugen Schwarz. She later moved to Los Angeles where she died. May her memory be a blessing.

Frankel Leó Street Synagogue, Budapest.
The synagogue was built in new gothic style. It was constructed by Sandor Fellner. Its inaguration took place on August 8th, 1888 at 8:00am. Originally, the synagogue was built in an open space and in 1928 it was surrounded by a seven storey apartment building serving the needs of the growing community. In the place of the synagogue a small praying house was standinf for over 100 years. The synagogue was empty and used as a stable during the Shoa.

Bridgetown - Jewish Cemeerry Gates

On the opposite side of the cemetery were these old, rusty gates, complete with Stars of David. It was interesting to find them in the Caribbean.
