Canadian Princess

This is another image from my recent drop-in to the Jordan Flea market, more properly known as the Prudhomme’s Antique And Vintage Market. The reason I had stopped there was a bit of a traffic snafu was making westbound travel on the Queen Elizabeth Way/QEW, and I decided to get on the North Service Road to get back to Grimsby, Ontario. The property sits on a narrow strip of land squeezed between the QEW and the South shore of Lake Ontario on the West side of Jordan Harbour. On weekends the various vendor stalls offer a wide range of, well, flea market staples, which most people call the junk in the attic, basement or garage, as appropriate. One of the vendor stands was jammed with the priceless treasures the vendor would be offering his/her clientele on the weekend. The thing that caught my eye was a mannequin bust topped with a pink ‘hat’ on which was embroidered ‘Canadian Princess’. - JW

Flea Market Vendor Stand, Jordan

Given a bit of a traffic snafu was making westbound travel on the Queen Elizabeth Way/QEW messy, I decided to get on the North Service Road to get back to Grimsby, Ontario. Along the way, I experienced a moment of weakness and stopped in at the Prudhomme’s Antique And Vintage Market, or, as most locals know it, the Jordan Flea market. It sits on a narrow strip of land squeezed between the QEW and the South shore of Lake Ontario on the West side of Jordan Harbour. On weekends the various vendor stalls offer a wide range of, well, flea market staples, which most people call the junk in the attic, basement or garage, as appropriate. I went to one of the vendor sheds which featured a distinctive redish, yellowish, and greenish striped paint theme. Oh, and a couple of vintage food signs. - JW

Jordan Harbour's mystery ship

I suspect that many people who have passed by this ship on the QEW highway have wondered about it, as I had, and there isn't any information about it if one gets off the highway to have a closer look. But through the magic of the interwebs, I have found an explanation about it, here.

Jordan, Ontario.

Coca Cola At The Flea Market

Coming home from St Catharines via the Queen Elizabeth Way/QEW, I stopped briefly at the flea market at Jordan Harbour. A quick wander about, camera in hand, yielded a few images. This shed clearly took advantage of vinyl siding left-overs in various not-so-popular colours to clad the exterior. Nicely placed was a red Coca Cola machine to add a bit of punch to the composition. And while you enjoy your refreshing, cold beverage, you can relax on the conveniently placed chair (if you trust it). - JW

PP in free Open Source RAWTherapee from Nikon RAW/NEF source file: set final image size to be 9000px wide, level the image, crop a little off the right side and bottom preserving the original aspect ratio, apply Tone Mapping at default levels, use the Graduated Neutral Density/GND tool rotated to cover the right side of the frame corresponding to the Coke machine, slightly boost Contrast very slightly and Chromaticity as well as Lightness in L-A-B mode, set colour balance by sampling the white lettering on the Coke machine, boost Vibrance a little, sharpen (edges only), save. The BIg Weasel

Or officially known as La Grande Hermine, is a replica of one of the 3 ships that Jacques Cartier used when exploring and the St. Lawrence river back in 1535. This is the largest one — measuring 140 feet long. The ship was constructed in 1914 in Quebec and began as a ferry on the St. Lawrence, and later became a cargo ship, and then a floating restaurant. It was in 1991 that the vessel was converted into a replica ship. This abandoned ship came to Jordan Harbour in 1997 with the intention of being turned into another restaurant or a gambling venue. In January of 2003, it was the victim of an arson fire. Luckily, the entire La Grande Hermine didn’t go up in smoke, and its damaged and “rustic” look actually adds to photographs and gives it more wonderment behind the history of this curious “shipwreck”. It is now a distinctive Niagara landmark and a roadside attraction to many people.

There are reports that the masts may be removed from this "treasure" in Jordan Harbour, so I wanted to capture a few more photos, and sure hope this landmark can be spared.

another day

One more sunset is added to the days La Grande Hermine sits rusting in Jordan Harbour. Built in Quebec in 1914 as a cargo ship, it spent its days on the St Lawrence River before becoming a restaurant and undergoing a refit as a replica of one of Jacques Cartier's ships. Arson ended its career and it is now a popular stop for the curious along the highway near Niagara Falls.

Fishermen on the break wall start to head home at sunset in Jordan Harbour. The actual sunset was behind me, but the colours in this direction were amazing.
