High Hats and Shawlies by National Library of Ireland on The Commons

High Hats and Shawlies

The Market Square in Donegal town with what looks like the tail end of the market activity. A couple of toffs stand talking to a lady while men gather around the tripod for the towns scales and carts are scattered about.

Beached - or gone for a pint in Costelloe's? by National Library of Ireland on The Commons

Beached - or gone for a pint in Costelloe's?

A coastal scene with a fishing boat beached just below a road in what looks like an urban area. There are so many clues to the location in the background, the Martello Tower, the monastic ruin and of course the buildings along the seafront. We haven't had the pleasure of Mr. Hargraves company and this is an especially pleasant opportunity to change that. Happy 23rd of June everybody!!!

Hold onto your hat there Mary... by National Library of Ireland on The Commons

Hold onto your hat there Mary...

My first thought when I saw this Hargrave image was that the people in the Post Office were cracked but then I saw the stones holding on the "hat" that is the roof! Not a very pretentious, imposing or indeed inviting premises nonetheless it was no doubt a community centre in it's time? I don't think we will be finding a streetview of this somehow.

Children on the rocks? by National Library of Ireland on The Commons

Children on the rocks?

Connemara might seem an unlikely place to find marble but the green stone found there continues to fascinate. Mr. Hargrave has captured four children among the rocks of a quarry and unless my eyes deceive me they appear to be boys in dresses?

Apropos yesterdays image of a GNR railbus, Mr. Hargrave worked as a railway engineer for the Great Northern Railway so there is a connection however slight...

Roofs, spires and water by National Library of Ireland on The Commons

Roofs, spires and water

Having arrived at the northern end of the country on Friday, we decided to go a step further to start this week by going out foreign altogether! This image, from the Hargrave collection, follows the trend of his most recent photographs with a location that is not likely to be in Ireland and he captured on his travels. Where is it and can we see what it looks like now?

Even though this image was/is apparently reversed (mirrored) in our catalogue, John Spooner was quick to identify this as a view of the Danube and Budapest in Hungary. Other contributors note the Chain Bridge, Buda Castle and Church of Sainte-Catherine d'Alexandrie...

"Street scene, featuring terraced housing and pedestrians : possibly a promenade" is Warrenpoint by National Library of Ireland on The Commons

"Street scene, featuring terraced housing and pedestrians : possibly a promenade" is Warrenpoint

Not one of our most crisp photographs, but there is still a lot going on. The catalogue description suggests a promenade which I for one am inclined to agree with. We will require the help of all of our fashionistas to help pinpoint the date. Have a great weekend.

BultacoFan, with corroboration from sharon.corbet, quickly identified this as the Seaview promenade (esplanade?) of Warrenpoint, County Down....

Sentry boxes and crowded pediments by National Library of Ireland on The Commons

Sentry boxes and crowded pediments

Starting this week with an image from the Joshua H. Hargrave Collection! An official looking building with a number of sentry boxes and an abundance of statues and figures on the pediments of the building. The "bridge" leading out is unusual and may be distinctive enough to help us with location or to give some idea of what it is?

Based on input from sharon.corbet, Beachcomber, derangedlemur, Vab2009 and in particular Niall McAuley we have 99.9% confirmation that this was taken in continental Europe. The sentry boxes (un-Irish) and sun shades (very un-Irish) were key give-aways. The consensus is that it is a shot (probably reversed in our catalogue) of the City Palace (Stadtschloss) in Potsdam, Germany. Hargrave captures it here in the late 19th or very early 20th century. It was significantly damaged during WWII - but thankfully later restored (albeit without the adornments we see here)....

"Unidentified Photograph from the Joshua H. Hargrave Collection" is Bray County Wicklow by National Library of Ireland on The Commons

"Unidentified Photograph from the Joshua H. Hargrave Collection" is Bray County Wicklow

Here we go again with a third "unidentified" photo this week. Not as difficult as Monday and perhaps a little less difficult than yesterday. You all continue to amaze me how you get to the bottom of these photographs. This photo is from the lesser spotted Hargrave Collection.

While there were suggestions of Cobh and Dun Laoghaire, [https://www.flickr.com/photos/91549360@N03] suggests (and others agree) that this is Bray, County Wicklow - perhaps capturing a regatta or other boat race. Despite the worthy jokes to the contrary, this image was probably not captured through a U-Boat periscope - although it seems likely it was taken from the deck of some vessel or other. (Impressive given the clarity of the image - from what may have been a moving vantage point...)
