Vansesero, as indicated on the sign in the photograph, is located to the east of Karhumäki, approximately 60–90 kilometers away by road or rail.

In the Battle of Karhumäki, 1,500 Finnish soldiers and 8,000 Soviet soldiers lost their lives.
The man on the front left is equipped with a bow saw (a collapsible frame saw), and the handle of an axe is also visible beneath the hem of his snow uniform.
In the foreground, the soldier lighting a cigarette carries a Soviet Tokarev rifle.
