NANUK: *Sits on the windowsill and sighs deeply as he sips his cup of hot tea and stares out the window.*
PADDY: “Hullo Nanuk!”
NANUK: “Oh! Hullo Paddy.” *Looks downcast.
PADDY: “What’s wrong Nanuk?”
NANUK: “Oh, nothing you can do anything about, Paddy.” *Sighs deeply again.*
PADDY: “Try me!” *Clambers up onto the windowsill next to Nanuk and makes himself comfortable* “Let me help cheer you up. I’d like to help, Nanuk, if I can. You seem so sad today.”
NANUK: “Well do you blame me, Paddy? I mean, look outside!”
PADDY: *Looks through the raindrop splattered window.* “I know. It’s raining today, and that means that we can’t go outside to play. But that is what happens when it is winter.”
NANUK: “Exactly Paddy! That is my point! It’s raining and it’s winter! You know what comes next don’t you, Paddy?” *Starts shivering.*
PADDY: “Yes! Spring comes next Nanuk!”
NANUK: *Shakes head slowly.* “No! No! No, Paddy! Not before it snows. I know it always snows during winter, and I hate the snow.” *Shivers more.* “It makes me feel so c… c… cold!”
PADDY: “Oh! You don’t have to worry about snow here in Australia, Nanuk!”
NANUK: “I know it snows here in Australia!” *Shivers more and wraps paws around teacup.* “I saw on the news on the telly the other night that six people were trapped in their cars in a blizzard and had to sleep in them overnight until they could be rescued!” *Pulls cardigan more tightly around himself as he shivers.* “C…c… col…lllld!”
PADDY: “Well, yes it is true that it does snow in Australia, and yes, those people did get stuck in their cars because of a blizzard, but don’t worry Nanuk. It only snows on the mountain tops, which are very high up and very far away! It never snows here at Daddy’s house!”
NANUK: “It doesn’t Paddy?”
PADDY: “No!”
NANUK: “Never Paddy?”
PADDY: “Never, Nanuk!”
NANUK: “Never, ever, Paddy?”
PADDY: *Shakes head adamantly. “Definitely not, Nanuk! So please don’t worry.”
NANUK: “I’ll… I’ll try n… n… not to, Paddy! Just the thought of s… sn… snow… makes me f…f… feel c… c… cold!”
PADDY: “Well, let me help you think of something else, Nanuk.” *Ponders for a moment.* “Do you know what else, Nanuk?”
NANUK: “No. What Paddy?”
PADDY: “Well, Daddy feels the cold too, just like you do, and that is why the central heating is on. It is nice and toasty and warm in here. Do you feel cold, Nanuk?”
NANUK: *Thinks for a moment and suddenly stops shivering.* “Why no, Paddy! Actually, I don’t! I feel nice and toasty and warm too!”
PADDY: “See Nanuk! So, winter days here are not like winter days in the Northern Hemisphere. It may rain, and it may be cooler temperatures, but it is nowhere near cold enough for snow here. That is why Mummy Marian thought it might be lovely for you to come and live with all of us here in Australia. You don’t ever have to worry about snow or blizzards ever again!”
NANUK: “Oh! What a relief!” *Fans face with paw and smiles a little.*
PADDY: “And what is nice about rainy days here in Melbourne is that we can play inside instead.”
NANUK: “Really Paddy?”
PADDY: “Of course Nanuk! We can play board games, or cards, or even hide-and-seek. Scout knows all the best hiding spots around the house, of course!”
NANUK: “Of course.”
PADDY: “Or we can sit on the window sill in the kitchen just like this, chatting over a warming cup of tea as we watch the rain falling outside.”
NANUK: “Oh! I hadn’t considered that, Paddy!”
PADDY: “Do you feel better now, Nanuk?”
NANUK: “I do, Paddy! You have made me feel so much happier now!” *Smiles a half-smile. “Thank you!”
PADDY: “You are very welcome, Nanuk!”
Nanuk's beautiful Willow Pattern teacup and saucer is part of a larger nursery tea set that was made in England by the Shell China Company in the 1920s. It features four cups and saucers as well as a tea pot, coffee pot, milk jug and sugar bowl. Each piece is gilt edged and decorated with the Willow Pattern in blue, just like the life-size equivalent. It has two sister sets: a 1920s Shell China Company nursery rhyme tea set that I was given as a gift some years ago by a close friend who knows I collect nursery ware and children’s tea sets and a faerie tale set from the 1930s Shell China Company faerie tale tea set that I have built up from various sellers over time.
My Paddington Bear came to live with me in London when I was two years old (many, many years ago). He was hand made by my Great Aunt and he has a chocolate coloured felt hat, the brim of which had to be pinned up by a safety pin to stop it getting in his eyes. The collar of his mackintosh is made of the same felt. He wears wellington boots made from the same red leather used to make the toggles on his mackintosh.
He has travelled with me across the world and he and I have had many adventures together over the years. He is a very precious member of my bear family.
Once upon a time, not so very long ago, there was a bear called Nanuk. Nanuk is a Polar Bear. The Teddy Bear Orphanage in the Netherlands recently contacted my friend Mummy Marian who is well known for being a generous host for bears who need a home. They told her that Nanuk has been living at the Teddy Bear Orphanage for quite some time. They also told Mummy Marian that he's very unhappy. Sweet Nanuk was born with a rare disease: poor body temperature regulation. He\'s always cold! The Teddy Bear Orphanage were looking for someone who lives in a country where it never freezes. Mummy Marian immediately thought of me, as like her, I am well known for being a generous host and making my home available to bears who need a family. Mummy Marian felt that Australia (where I live) would be the most perfectly wonderful place for Nanuk to live: a warm country with me as his Daddy, and many bear friends to make a family for him. I considered Mummy Marian’s request, and I immediately said “yes”! I think Nanuk will be a very happy Polar Bear, living with me and all my bears. We don’t know the end of the story yet, because of course, Nanuk’s tale is only just beginning! However, I do think he will live happily ever after!
