Wormerveer - De Adelaar 3

The Netherlands - Wormerveer
Image made with kite and camera (attached to the kite's line). More than a year has gone by since I posted my last kite aerials. Early in the morning, with the help of captain Kel, I lifted my kite from his boat on the Zaan river and attached the camera to the line, later on. In this way I was able to make some images of the former soap factory De Adelaar (The Eagle), a distinctive monument in our town thanks to the concrete eagle on top of the building. © Tom Kisjes

Achlum 2

The Netherlands-Achlum
The St. Gertrude church in the Frisian terp village Achlum is one of many medieval Frisian churches, built out of tuff from the Eifel mountains in the 11th Century. Through the ages churches like this one have been subjected to many restorations. Sadly the 15th Century church tower lost its regional characteristic saddle roof in 1790. The around 600 villagers of Achlum play their typical Frisian handball sport "kaatsen" or rebounding) on the pitch behind the church. You can play it with your family, you can play it by night and you can play it with soft balls (instead of the regular hard ones). Image made with kite and camera (attached to the kite's line). © Tom Kisjes

Cornwerd 1

The Netherlands-Cornwerd
The Frisian terp village Cornwerd lies just behind the dyke that protects against the sometimes raging waters of the IJsselmeer and close to the Afsluitdijk (Enclosure Dam) that connects the provinces North Holland and Friesland, with a length of 32 kilometres (20 miles). Not much medieval is left of the originally Romanesque, 13th-century Boniface church. The village was first mentioned in the 9th century as Quirnifurt, and means "terp with wind mill". Nowadays Cornwerd has around 80 inhabitants. Image made with kite and camera (attached to the kite's line). © Tom Kisjes

Noorderveld

The Netherlands - Heemskerk
View on Noorderveld, at the edge of the Heemskerk urban area. More than two thousand years ago this polder land belonged to the estuary of the Oer-IJ, a northern tributary of the river Rhine. A little further, near nowadays Castricum, the Oer-IJ discharged into the North Sea. Noorderveld now functions as a (recently re-landscaped) water storage area with a high natural value. Lots of meadowbirds still breed here. Photographed in morning light with kite and camera (attached to the kite's line). © Tom Kisjes

Muiderslot 1

The Netherlands - Muiden
Muiden Castle (Muiderslot) is located in Muiden, some 15 kilometers southeast of Amsterdam, at the mouth of the Vecht river, where it flows into the freshwater IJmeer (that used to be the -saltwater- Zuiderzee). The history of Muiden Castle begins with Count Floris V who built a stone castle at the mouth of the river in 1280, to enforce a toll on traders along a frequently used trade route to Utrecht, one of the most important trade towns of that age. After the murder of Floris in 1296 the castle was eventually demolished around 1300, but rebuilt on the same spot based on the same plan, approximately 80 years later. After a period of neglect in the 19th century the castle was restored to its former glory at the end of that century. Photographed on a peaceful Sunday morning with kite and camera (attached to the kite's line). © Tom Kisjes

The Netherlands - Bloemendaal
Wandering along the Kennemer dunes at the North Sea coast, north of Bloemendaal aan Zee, with kite and camera (attached to the kite's line), not long before sundet. This is one of the sites of the Dutch Dune Revival project. The main aim is to create a more dynamic, revitalised coastal landscape with a.o. drifting grey and white dunes. IJmuiden is visible in the background, as well as tthe signature of Tata Steel. © Tom Kisjes

Warder opgraving 3

The Netherlands-Warder
In the summer of 2022 an archaeological survey was conducted near the east entrance of the village Warder, right through the old Markermeer dike which is currently being reinforced by means of a newly built dike body. A medieval 15th century house on a 13th century terp, as well as a 17th century lock were excavated. And there was a lot to learn about the stages of development of the dike.
